Radio Martí's news director demoted and returns to TV Martí

Radio Martí's news director demoted and returns to TV Martí

Dec 15, by Armando F. Mastrapa for CRW

Radio Martí's News Director William Valdes has been transferred to TV
Martí and returns to his former position of reporter. As a result of
his transfer, responsibilities have been divided for Radio Martí news
operations. Clara Dominguez will be responsible for all radio news
programming and Cristina Sanson will be responsible for all news and
newscasts.

Ares Spinoza of La Nueva Cuba http://www.lanuevacuba.com/incitatus2.htm
reports that according to
informed sources a heated exchange took place at the October 28
reunion between Herminio San Roman, Director of Office of Cuba
Broadcasting(OCB) and William Valdes (former RM News Director) that
nearly came to fisticuffs. The meeting took place to inform Valdes of
his demotion stemming from his numerous errors as director, the
allegation of employee intimidation and impeding the internal
investigation of OCB as well as the the mounting investigative
pressure on OCB Director San Roman.
Sources indicated that Valdes argued he was carrying out Roberto
Rodriguez' direct orders with San Roman's knowledge and was being
sacrificed while they avoided direct responsibility for Radio Martí's
debacle.

Also present at the meeting were Roberto Rodriguez Tejera (Director
of Radio Marti) and Humberto Medrano (Advisor to the Director of
OCB).

POLAND.6035, R. Racja, sked 0600-0700 per item in NU 1555.I tuned
in at 0639 Dec 6 and found them in the clear, talk by M&W at the
outset, then mostly fast paced talk by woman, occasional mx bridges.
Several IDs noted before 0642, when the VOA came on from nowhere (VOA
is scheduled here for 0630-0700, Serbian via Biblis [per IBB B99
sked]; perhaps their absence until 0642 was just an xmtr fluke).
From 0642, VOA was dominant, though Racja was still pretty distinct
in the background. Both stns went off at 0700.I have sent a
recording of my reception at 0641 to Herk for posting on NU Sight &
Sound.Listen for the R. Racja IDs at :05 and :28, and the VOA
coming on in mid-prgm at 1:30.I believe VOA is on 6035 in EG via
Greenville until 0630, in which case there wouldn't be much chance
for clear R. Racja rcpn during the 0600-0630 period; also not
feasible in ECNA at other rptd b/c times:1100-1200 (6180) or
1900-2000 on 6165 (Switzerland dominates).Prgm is said to be
targeted to Belarus and the Belarussian minority in Poland.

IRAN

DX Information from the British DX Club.
[RE: 1730-1800 and/or 1830-1900 R. International on 7520]

A Persian (Farsi) language programme of this name (with the English
word "International" being used in the ID) was being aired by WWCR at
the start of this year. Glenn Hauser reported the story at the time.
I don't know whether it is still being aired on WWCR. [NO, it has
been off for some months; would have been weekdays 1400-1430 on 15685
- Hauser]. Very likely, the producers of the programme have realised
that they've got a much better chance of getting a decent signal into
Iran from Tajikistan than Tennessee. Probably cheaper too.

Relations between Iran and Tajikistan are not too good. Tajikistan
has been plagued for some time by an Islamic insurgency and they must
be suspicious that the rebels are getting at least moral support from
Iran. So the Tajik authorities probably won't mind hosting this
operation. Incidentally, it appears that almost all this clandestine-
type broadcasting into Iran is a complete waste of time. Iran is in
political ferment at present, but the debate is taking place within
the country through the newspapers there and in the "open" foreign
broadcasters (e.g. BBC, VOA, Kol Israel - the latter is thought to be
particularly popular).
(C.Greenway-UK Dec 3 via GH SWDXR 99-66)

** IRAN [non]. An Iranian colleague of mine has listened to Radio
International, and my report on her findings is at the end of this
message. As you can see, I am now sure that this is the same "Radio
International" as previously aired via WWCR about a year ago. Mr
Javadi makes an appearance again, as does his newspaper 'Porsesh',
both of which were named in connection with the WWCR programme. They
now announce a UK phone number, rather than a Toronto one as before.

Location of transmitter: What is the source of the suggestion that it
broadcasts from Tajikistan? My own theory is this: The opening
announcement says the station does not broadcast on Mondays or
Wednesdays. The Persian word for Monday is "Dushanbe". My guess is
that non-Persian speaking DXers heard the word Dushanbe in the
opening announcement and jumped to a conclusion. Of course it could
still be coming from Tajikistan. Listening to it tonight (5th
December) I heard the former Soviet Union tune-up tones prior to
1730, but from the excellent strength I wonder if the site is closer
to us. Report follows:

Iran: "Radio International" heard broadcasting in Persian from
unknown site

A Persian-language radio station calling itself "Radio International"
was heard broadcasting at 1730 gmt on 2nd December on the shortwave
frequency of 7520 kHz. An opening announcement stated that the radio
broadcasts daily, except Mondays and Wednesdays, at 2100-2130 Tehran
time (1730-1800 gmt). There then followed a discussion programme
chaired by Azar Majedi and with the participation of her "colleague
in Canada" Mostafa Saber and Ali Javadi [see Note below], editor-in-
chief of the newspaper `Porsesh' (`Question'). Their discussions
covered the World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle and the
current controversy in Iran over the imprisonment of the liberal
former interior minister, Abdollah Nuri, and the surrounding disputes
by various political factions. The broadcast ended with an invitation
for listeners' comments. A UK mobile telephone number of 44-771-461-
1099 and an e-mail address of radio7520@yahoo.com were announced.

(Note: A broadcast by a programme of the same name - "Radio
International" - was heard in late 1998 and early 1999 being carried
by the US shortwave station WWCR in Nashville, Tennessee, which hires
airtime to a variety of political and religious groups. At the time,
WWCR stated that the airtime in question had been hired by "Eric
[sic] Javadi", thus indicating that the current broadcasts by "Radio
International" are linked to those previously aired on WWCR. No
announcement was heard from the current broadcast of "Radio
International" as to where its broadcasts are now emanating from.)
(C.Greenway-BBCM Dec 6 via via GH SWDXR 99-68)

** IRAN [non]. Further to my report on this new Iranian clandestine
(see G Hauser's Shortwave/DX Report 99-68 issued yesterday):

On Sunday I e-mailed the station at radio7520@yahoo.com but it
bounced back with the message "This user does not have a yahoo.com
account"

I'm not sure what to make of this. The address was read out very
clearly by the station and "makes sense" (7520 being their
frequency). Perhaps there's been mis-coordination between whoever set
up the e-mail address and whoever prepares their scripts.

As per announced schedule, the station was NOT on the air yesterday
(Monday). 7520 is an excellent frequency choice as it's a completely
clear channel, also clear either side, at 1730.

KOREA

JAMMING:Beijing usually directs its jamming towards these foreign
bcs: BBC, VOA, RFA and TWN in Mandarin, Cantonese, Tibetan and
Uighur, but it seems that how Korean from RFA is being targeted on
9445 at 1530-1630 with the usual FM dom sce programming overriding
RFA.

One can conclude that sections of the CHNese Communist Party / govt
have decided to offer Pyongyang assistance as power shortages or the
reliability of KRE equipment has made necessary the use of the more
powerful CHNese jammers that can be well heard here in EUR 1500-1700
during local winter afternoons. During the summer Korean was carried
on 15660 1530-1630 with KRE 'buzz saw' type jamming like that used by
BUL and other Soviet bloc countries during the Cold War.KRE still
uses wobble jamming against VoA in Kor and a more modern electronic
wobble signal over KBS in Kor 0900-1100 on 13670, which now
propagates here.

One could call this jamming assistance 'Fraternal Socialist Help' as
despite Beijing establishing diplomatic ties with Seoul, there are
sections of the party who remain ever friendly and brotherly towards
their comrades in Pyongyang. Also without forgetting, there is a
Korean community in NoEaCHN so the govt is ever sensitive about the
effects of poverty on the KRE population and what Koreans in CHN may
do if given a chance.
(Adrian Childs, Dorset, SW DXR by GH Nov 25 via BCDX 441)

This is indeed happening, and it's very interesting, but I am yet to
determine whether it is Beijing's fraternal help assistance to the
comrades of Pyongyang, or more simply, an error of some sort.
