New : Voice of the Democratic Path of Ethiopian Unity
New Mexican clandestine from Chiapas in the pirate bands ?
...............................................................
New : Voice of the Democratic Path of Ethiopian Unity
The new Ethiopian clandestine station - reportedly via a Deutsche
Telekom transmitter, and said to have started on 22nd December -
calls itself "Voice of the Democratic Path of Ethiopian Unity"
("Finote Demokrasi Ye-Ethiopia Andinet Dimts" in Amharic).
The broadcast last Wednesday (29th December) was a test with an
announcement in Amharic stating very general aims and political
orientation of the station (in favour of unity, democracy, human
rights, etc) but making no mention of a sponsoring organization or
contact details. It announced the same schedule as already reported
and observed, i.e. Wednesdays at 1600-1700 on 11670 and Sundays at
0800-0900 on 21550.
C.Greenway-BBCM Jan 02 for CRW)
Voice of the Democratic Path of Ethiopian Unity (Amharic, "Finote
Demokrasi Ye-Ethiopia Andinet Dimts") was first observed by BBC
Monitoring in Dec 1999.It reportedly b/cs via DTK, operating in
Amharic on 21550 at 0800-0900 Sunday, and on 11670 at 1600-1700 on
Wednesday. The stn states that it was established to safeguard the
national integrity of Ethiopia, bring about unity based on equality
of the Ethiopian peoples, preserve the sovereignty of the Ethiopian
peoples, bring about a democratic system in Ethiopia, ensure the
preservation of human rights of Ethiopians, ensure the supremacy of
the law, bring about justice and ensure equality of gender, religion
and nationalities, and contribute to the struggle aimed at bringing
about social justice.[A modest agenda--JB]Several similar
Ethiopian opposition stns hrd over the past few years which have also
b/c only on Sundays and Wednesdays include:Voice of Ethiopian
Patriotism (1992), Free Radio Voice of Ethiopian Unity (1993-94), R.
Voice of United and Free Ethiopia/Voice of One Free Ethiopia
(1997-99).

New Mexican clandestine from Chiapas in the pirate bands ?
UNID.6955U, 0124-0146* Jan 24, SIO 252+.Despite being in the
pirate band, and not inconceivably with a pirate xmtr, this was
clearly a Mexican clandestine from Chiapas.M&W ancrs in SP with
long talks about Chiapas, including a plea to the President of
Mexico. Some of the talk was clearly oriented to listeners in the
U.S., which was mentioned from time to time.Occasionally some nice
folk mx with guitars mixed in.Very nice production values for a
clandestine; the voices of the ancrs were calm, and this was a soft
sell for the Chiapas cause. There was allegedly a stn a few years
ago called La Voz de Chiapas Libre, which even distributed Chiapas
postage stamps from an address in San Diego, but there was no such ID
during the prgm, and in fact I copied no clear ID as such. One of the
more interesting stns that I have hrd for a while.Did anybody else
catch this with a clearer ID and/or an address? (Zeller-OH)Hrd in
the North East at this time [arnd 0123 UTC Jan 24] is a strong SP
language b/c on 6955U.Does not sound like any pirate b/c often
found on this fqy.
(P.Costello-USA via SWLTalk list via NU 1562 A)
Regarding the 6955 Mexican "clandestine," this opens up several
options, but, more to the point, it reminds me of "Radio Free
Harlem."As you may recall, this went on the air during the period
in the 1960s when there were numerous urban riots. It was in the 41
mb, offering up a firebrand message that caused more than a little
concern among folks in the established order, many of whom were
genuinely convinced that the riots were part of a communist plot to
overthrow the U.S. government. The thing was, despite considerable
effort, the authorities never did find out who was behind the
station, which, after a brief existence, disappeared completely and
forevermore from the airwaves.--About a decade later, I was doing
a story on Carl McIntyre's floating AM minesweeper station, "Radio
Free America," for FRENDX.The engineers consisted, secretly, of
volunteers from legitimate radio stations in the PA/NJ/NY area, and
we wound up spending a number of hours together talking shop.-- One
night it was decided that the chosen frequency (1180 kHz, I seem
to recall) had problems, so they wanted to get Rev. McIntyre's
approval for a different frequency, around 1610.The problem was, he
retired early and was a sound sleeper, so when the carload of us
drove up to his house we got no answer, and it took over half an hour
of the driver's beeping the horn and flashing his car lights into
McIntyre's bedroom before he finally appeared at the door in his
pajamas covered by a suit jacket to protect his dignity. -- In the
meantime, I was discussing various clandestine radio issues with one
of the engineers, who was also a ham, and he finally broke down and
told me his story. As he put it, he had been associated with a New
York public FM radio station, and in that capacity had just taped a
particularly fiery sermon by Adam Clayton Powell of the Abissynian
Baptist Church in Harlem. He returned to his apartment, had any
number of beers, then on impulse connected the recorder to his ham
rig and played juicy bits of the tape on the air, announcing the
supposed station as "Radio Free Harlem" and using a wooden mallet and
iron kitchen skillet as the station's "bong."--After a couple of
days the FCC tracked the signal down to his apartment building, but
he was able to shut down quickly enough that they never discovered
him, and that was the end of the so-called "Radio Free Harlem."--
Perhaps the Mexican clandestine is using a genuine clandestine
transmitter, or is being relayed by an existing pirate operation.
But as Radio Free Harlem suggests, there is a third alternative.
(L.Magne-USA in NU 1563)
MEXICO[?]. Glenn, heard the following tonight: Mexico, unID, 1/24
0043 to 0113* 6950 USB Spanish broadcast with mentions of Zapatistas,
Chiapas, libertad, appeals to the Prez. of Mexico, repeated from
*0115 to 0145* on 6955 USB. Both typical pirate freq. Booming into
western KY. Probable relay by a pirate? Wish I had Spanish in high
school, not French.
(C.Crawford-USA in DXL 00-14, January 25, 2000)
MEXICO [non?] Glenn, the following was posted to FRN/vines ACE
website: Gentlemen, The station you heard [on 6950, 6955, see DXLD
00-14] was a new clandestine in support of the Zapatista uprising in
Chiapas, Mexico. The mentions of Argentina related to similarities of
the human rights violations during Argentina's "Dirty War" and the
human rights violations more recently in Chiapas. The station is "La
Voz del Zapatista" or "The Voice of the Zapatista". As I understand
it QSL arrangements are being made through one of the U.S. pirate
drops. The location is of course secret. I will post more information
at a later date. That is all, Commandante Null
(via C.Crawford-USA Jan 29 in DXL 00-19, January 31, 2000)
MEXICO [non]. [cf DXLD 00-19] Commandante Null is better known as
Mike Adams of NPC Information Associates in Atlanta. This isn’t new,
it was a replay of a program that ran on RFPI in the spring of 1999,
Chiapas, the World Speaks. It aired on RFPI only briefly. I spoke
with Adams today and he said that he posted a real audio file of this
program the other day at his website-
http://www.mindspring.com/~exomike/Unbeknownst to Adams, a US pirate
then recorded the audio and put it on shortwave. Having said that,
Adams is considering making additional programs available. He has a
total of ten. So if the pirates are up for it, there may be more
programs from this "clandestine".
(H.Johnson-USA Jan 31 in CDX Special via DXL 00-20, February 1, 2000)
Now known as Michael Leo Lively, Adams has a twisted sense of humor
immediately evident on the webpage. Makes one wonder how seriously
the Chiapas show should be taken. Perhaps I will succeed in listening
to all of it. One also questions the nativity of a commander who does
not know how to spell Comandante

AFGHANISTAN
I noted Kabul on Dec-29 (and subsequent days) on medium-wave 1107
during our local Indian evening, including the regular English slot
at 1500-1515 including talk on Islam and Islamic-style choruses sung
in English by male voices -- lyrics such as '(indistinct)
Afghanistan, your holy religion is Islam, your constitution is
Koran', closing at 1515 with announcement to the effect: 'thanks for
listening, see you again at same time tomorrow' followed by ID in
unknown lang including phrase 'Kabul, Afghanistan'. Unfortunately
signal always fades under co-channel Indian station when an English
ID should be audible at top of hour, so I'm not sure exactly what
they call themselves now. No trace of them on 7200 which is dominated
by VOIRI Tehran at thattime. There is a strong and distorted signal
audible here at0515-0600/0645v on 7199.5v, but I've no idea whether
it's them -- working on it.

BELORUSSIA
Baltic waves:I think I just heard the new R Baltic Waves from
Vilnius. On 612 kHz at 17.28 UTC-january 15th- I heard an IS (a
simple, but nice synthesizer-tune) and ann's by a man. I think I
heard a ID in Belorussian which sounded like "Radyo Balticske Walle".
After the next IS, there was an ID Ithink in Lithuanian(it sounded
indeed like: baltijos bangu radijas). All difficult to read due to
heavy co/ch QRM. In Eurolog
( http://geocities.com/Colosseum/Park/3232/Eurolog0100.htm ) I read
that they do a relay of R Polonia in Belorussian at this time. The IS
was not the same as that of R Polonia's external service as heard on
Dave kernick's magnificent site, so I think they use their own IS. Is
there anyone in the region who can confirm my monitoring?? A few
minutes later I lost the station in the enormous co/ch QRM I had on
612!!By the way when searching for Baltic Waves last night Jan 14th
I noted that the time peeps of R Bosnia Hercegovina on 612 were 3
seconds too late at 2000 !

Litauen/Belarus: Radio Baltic Waves (Baltijos bangu radijas, P.O.Box
Union Litauischer Journalisten abgelehnt.

Radio Baltic Waves (in Lithuanian: "Baltijos bangu radijas", in

Coup d'etat attempt in Ecuador
>Maybe the CONAIE is running a clandestine station.

A shortwave station, which always has been very pro-Indígena is ERPE
Riobamba. A pity that they are not active on v5010 kHz these days.
Other stations are Radio Latacunga and Radio Runacunapac Yachana,
both on medium wave only. Radio Bahai de Otavalo (v4950) never has
been into politics too much. An interesting catch might be Radio
Federación Shuar (v4960) from the jungle town of Sucúa. Radio Río
Amazonas was closed many years ago, following a long dispute between
the organisation running the station and Indígenas living in the
Amazon region. There are other stations in Ecuador, which are
operated by / for Indígenas; most of them have an evangelical
background and stay away from politics.

from Lampertheim Germany suffered by co-ch VOIRIB Arabic progr.
Original VoIRIB outlet for cross check is 9895. Bubble jamming heard
also on 7285 earlier this week.

IRAQ/CZECH REPUBLIC. The following item appeared on Radio Prague's
English news, January 17:
Iraq is reportedly refusing to sign trade deals with the Czech
Republic in protest at broadcasts to the country by Radio Free
Europe, which is based in Prague. The AFP news agency said an
official Czech delegation left Iraq empty-handed on Sunday after two
weeks of fruitless negotiations. One member of the delegation was
quoted by the ITAR-TASS news agency as saying that Iraq was refusing
to sign a single contract as long as Radio Free Europe, which is
funded by the US government, continued to operate from the Czech

New factional radio station reported in Mogadishu.
Text of report by Somali newspaper ``Xog-Ogaal`` on 16th January
A new radio station reportedly belonging to Husayn Haji Bod, one of
the Mogadishu faction leaders, was heard in the city last evening and
the evening before. It was test broadcasting on the 49 metre band.
Mogadishu is already home to several radio stations, such as Voice of
Somali Pacification, which supports Uthman Hasan Ali Ato, and
HornAfric. Pro-Husayn Muhammad Aydid radio, Voice of the Somali
People, which has been off air for a long time because of technical
problems, is now back on air after undergoing refurbishment. Voice of
Alhu-Sunna Waljamaa is still off air. (Source: ``Xog-Ogaal``,

think ``49 mb`` could well mean the favourite 6.7-6.9 MHz area

WESTERN SAHARA
Radio Nacional de la Republica Arabe Saharaui Democratica (1550 kHz)
has a page up with an antenna photo, a nice-sounding RealAudio feed,
and some popular Saharan music. Programming is in Spanish.

After listening to the RealAudio feed mentioned in my last message, I
notice that it is not live, but a 6-minute recording of the station.

RUSSIA
Grigory Grigoriev passed away
Russian DX League is sorry to tell the DX community that Grigory
Grigoriev, one of the prominent figures in Russian DXing, passed away
on Dec 10, 1999at the age of 46.
G. Grigoriev, who lived in the small town of Slantsy (Leningrad [St.
Petersburg] region, North-West of RUS), was a shortwaver for over 30
years; he owned the largest collection of QSLs in Russia. As a
person, devoted to DX-Hobby, he was internationally known, as well as
in his own country.
We have lost a close friend, who had gone being so young. But he will
never be forgotten by those, who knew him.(Anatoly Klepov-RUS,
RUS-DX, Jan 24)
Grigory Grigoriev - R.I.P.
I was shocked to learn that the famous Russian DXer Grigory Grigoriev
has passed away on December 10, 1999 at the age of only 46.
Grigory, living in the Russian town of Slantzy, was a DXer for over
30 years. In the mid-1980s, with the Cold War still in progress, he
became one of the first Soviet DXers to appear in the international
DX community and we had been in close contact ever since. After the
end of the Cold War and the Soviet Union other problems emerged, but
even unemployment and bad health couldnďt stop Grigory from DXing.
His monitoring skills and his knowledge especially of the Middle
Eastern clandestine scene were amazing and he was also a regular
monitor for several international shortwave stations. He had one of
the largest QSL collections in Russia.
For over a decade, Grigory had been one of the most regular
contributors to my columns in several DX magazines. His dedication to
the shortwave hobby will never be forgotten.
