USA : Plans for Radio 'Free Muslim World'

USA : Washington plans Radio 'Free Muslim World' for 2001

Voice of Freedom and Renewal ?
NIDENTIFIED - 6965 at 0415 on 12/6: Man in seeming AA from 0415
tune. Seemed like there was a second transmission mixing in but that
may have been a voice UTE. Occasional flute music and stringed
instrument, bowed rather than plucked. Vocals and more talk to 0437
when lost. The Voice of Freedom and Renewal is listed in PWBR - 02
but this was also being reported on 6985 a couple of months ago, and
even QSL'd as such. So is this a move back to a former frequency or
something else entirely?

Millennium Radio
(Voice of the Horn is a mistranslation, see log of T.Zeidan-EGY)
Today again no any trace of a carrier on 21550 around 1330 and at
1405 recheck. Interesting that these broadcasts were preceded by a 1
kHz tone like "Voice of Afghanistan" on 9950, indicating that pro-
bably the same playout facility is in use by both; World Radio Net-
work?
(K.Ludwig-D Nov 28, 2001 in DXLD 1-185)
21550 Millennium Radio - Heard here today for the first time, all in
Arabic except for the English ID. 1353 woman announcer talking on
Africa, 1359 ID, music bridge sounding like Eritrean music, 1400
news of recent massacre in Nigerian village by army troops. 1415
another bridge, same kind of music. Then program that I think was
entitled literally "From the Sites" min al-mawaqia.] Talk on Sudan
and Kuwait, rather uninteresting. 1429 Email address given and off.
Fair signal mixing with co-channel Voice Christiana throughout.
(H.Johnson-USA Nov 29, 2001 in CDX 375)
Sawt al Qarn - On November 30th the content of the programme seemed
to me only relgious. Starting at 1330 UT with qur´an like chantings,
then at 1400 UT Id in Ar and E, followed by report about ramadan and
in the last 10 minutes report about "the beauty of islam" in
English.
(P.Robic-AUT Nov 30, 2001 for CRW)
Today Nov 30 the 21550 1330-1430 broadcast was on air; I missed the
sign on but found the transmission in progress at 1340 with prayer.
At 1410 recheck they aired a bawling speech, apparently from a pub-
lic event (no audience reactions but so much reverb that I expected
the PA system to oscillate). After this speech, professionally pro-
duced jingles with English ID as "Malayan [sic] Voice", followed by
an absolutely amateurish record of some talk, sounding like done
with a kitchen set. Strong signal, certainly direct refraction
rather than scatter, so Woofferton could well be the transmitter
site; also the audio processing would fit
(K.Ludwig-D Nov 30, 2001 in DXLD 1-186)

aeThis is Malayan Voiceae. The progr was in Ar mostly with nx from
Africa (Liberia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Sudan). Eritrea was often
mentioned. 55545 - so it must be a European tx.
(A.Petersen-DEN DXW, Dec 3, 2001 via BCDX 551)
I got confused, because in Arabic "ALQARN" means either HORN..which
is wrong in this case..or QARN means millennium ... 1000 years.
Anyway I picked them up *1330 and the ID in Ar (IDHAAT SOUT AL QARN)
Voice of MILLENNIUM Radio. The Ar ID is always followed by an En ID!
The lang used is sort of Sudanese Arabic ... but not really. It's
difficult for me to understand. The Sudanese Arabic is hard to get.
The confusing thing is when they are reading the nx papers, it's
always newspapers from the United Arab Emirates !?!? Talking about
the latest in the Sudan civil war, Eritrea, Nigeria.....etc.

Hi Glenn, Went to check on 7385 again last night at 2345 for "Que

apologies to the SWL community. This is yet another freq of Tibet
PBS (Xizang) in Tibetan, in parallel with 4905 4920 7125 7360, and
there will be several more, no doubt. The ID got me mixed up: Xizang

Also went to compare it to Vietnamese on RFA's transmission at the

Catholic radio to broadcast nationally in 2002 | Excerpt from report
by Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias web site on 7 December
The Portuguese Catholic Church is firmly committed to its plans of
investing in the expansion of Christian Radio Ecclésia to the whole
of the Angolan territory. The first general broadcast has been sche-
duled for May 2002. The station has managed to gather all the neces-
sary legal, technical and financial requirements through the commit-
ment of its staff, the raising of its own budget (through the
church's 2001 Easter offerings) and international support.
Libano Monteiro, of FEC - the non-governmental organization respon-
sible for the involvement of the Portuguese Catholic Church in this
project - told Diário de Notícias that a "decisive meeting" of Radio
Ecclésia's development group had taken place in Luanda between the 1
and 4 December. It was decided at this meeting that the radio would
build five divisions in the provinces of Benguela, Huambo, Malange,
Lubango and Uige and that the remaining 11 provinces would have FM
transmitters for rebroadcasting installed there. The provincial sta-
tions will be under the management of the local dioceses who have
pledged to cover the maintenance costs of their transmitters.
The project run by FEC --- presided over by Patriarch of Lisbon D.
José Policarpo --- has received the support of other international
NGOs: of the Dutch NIZA [Netherlands Institute for Southern Africa]
(responsible for the assessment on the ground of future capacities)
and of the Irish Trocaire. The first stage of this project --- which
includes radio digitalization, the training of correspondents and
the launch of short wave airing on two daily bulletins --- has also
received the support of the Irish Cafod and of Misericor (linked to
the German Catholic Church). So far some 328,000 euros have been
spent. The support of the Dutch and Swedish governments is also ex-
pected during the second stage of this project, the cost of which is
estimated at a total of 430,000 euros. The final cost is believed to
be over 3.4m euros.
There is another reason turning May 2002 into an historical date for
this radio... Radio Ecclésia started broadcasting daily on 19 March
1955. Its first automatic airing system --- allowing it to broadcast
24 hours a day --- was inaugurated, on an experimental basis, on the
date marking its 15th anniversary. On 24 January 1978, a presiden-
tial decree closed down the station as a result of the nationaliza-
tion of the media in Angola. In March 1997 the Catholic station
finally reopened.
At present, Radio Ecclésia broadcasts in FM 24 hours a day from the
capital Luanda (with a catchment area of 3.5 million people in
contrast with the 12 million of the Angolan National Radio [RNA] ---
the state broadcaster, owner of several regional units). The RNA
also owns Radio Cinco, Radio Luanda and Radio FM Stereo (Luanda) and
has links to the private Radio Lac (Luanda) and Radio Comercial
(Cabinda). The other two private radio stations [broadcasting in
Angola] are Radio Morena
(Benguela/Lobito) and Radio 2000 (Lubango).

Czech-based US radio boosts broadcasts to Central Asia, Afghanistan
| Text of report in English by Czech news agency CTK
Prague, 3 December: The Prague-seated Radio Free Europe/Radio Liber-
ty (RFE/RL) today announced an extension of its Central Asian broad-
casts to include programmes in Azerbaijani, Turkmen and Farsi, one
of the languages spoken in Afghanistan.
In an e-mail message sent to CTK today, RFE/RL, a US-operated sta-
tion, says it has taken the measure as a contribution to the fight
against terrorism.
As of today, the station has added two more hours to its regular
Turkmen broadcasts, one and a half hour to the Azerbaijani broad-
casts and one hour to the broadcasts in the Farsi language, RFE/RL
President Thomas Dine wrote.
In the following two months the broadcasts in Azerbaijan, Farsi,
Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Turkmen and Uzbek languages will be extended
to include 20 more hours altogether.
The station's Radio Free Iraq broadcasts in the Arabic language will
be extended as well.
RFE/RL spokeswoman Sonia Winter told CTK today that apart from the
above mentioned extension, the station continued to prepare the
launch of broadcasts to Afghanistan within the Radio Free Afgha-
nistan project which the US House of Representatives had approved
almost unanimously in early November. The broadcasts, held in Pashto
and Dari, two main languages spoken in Afghanistan, are to inform
Afghans about the reasons of the US strikes.
Originally seated in Munich, RFE/RL was established in 1949 in order
to spread news to and support democratic values in countries behind
the Iron Curtain, including the then communist Czechoslovakia. It
moved to Prague in 1995. At present it broadcasts to 25 countries in
27 languages for more than 1,000 hours a week.

China and Radio Free Asia
Thinking about latest reports on China National Radio and Radio Free
Asia in Chinese heard on the same frequencies (but not mixed) I came
to a crazy idea:
Radio Free Asia relays China National Radio and time to time it
inserts its own transmissions in Chinese. I know - it is too crazy
to be true, but would not it be a good way how to pretend that
programs have its origin in P. R. of China?
(K.Honzik-CZE Nov 30, 2001 in HCDX)
China and Radio Free Asia on 4800 kHz
As I have already reported I hear a strong Chinese signal on 4800
kHz relaying CNR 1. Artiom Prokhorov in Moscow reported a strong
signal of Radio Free China on this frequency. Now he writes me the
following interesting news and he also mentions the missing signal
on 4750 kHz (I have reported on it in a separate mail to HCDX
today):
" Hi, Karel. YES, last night (NOV 29) I DID hear CNR 1 on 4800 with
superb quality at 2300 UTC onwards and even with announcement in
English at 2340 UTC. No trace of RFA at all on 4800 and 4820 and on
6050! Propagation trick? Maybe at your place at the same time you
heard RFA instead of me? No any signal last night on 4750. Artiom."
Interesting - isn't it?

Re: MediaTelevision takes a rare look inside Radio Havana Cuba
Should be interesting, and tnx to everyone for tracking down how to
catch it later. But, BIG LIE DEPARTMENT:
"the Caribbean nation is constantly subject to radio jamming, and
high power Anti-Castro broadcasts."
Cuba is NOT "subject to radio jamming" but the SOURCE of radio
jamming against anyone who dares oppose Castro. I wonder if the
program makes this clear. No one ever jams RHC, (except itself in
frequent technical mishaps).

Misc - GEORGIA
Adsharia TV on the air!
IN REPLY TO: "BATUMI, Georgia -- President Aslan Abashidze of the
autonomous republic of Adzharia (capital Batumi, population
considerably less than the London Borough of Hammersmith) has a
vision. By the end of the year he wants everyone from Belfast to
Bokhara and from Stavanger to the Sudan to have heard of his
minuscule kingdom. [...] But this isn't all. News from Adzharia
wouldn't be much use to the people of Edinburgh or Naples or
Schwarzwald if it only came in Georgian. So the ingenious Abashidze
hit on a plan. He'd broadcast the news of Adzharia, where donkeys
outnumber buses four to one, in five languages -- English, French,
German, Italian and Georgian. [...]"
So this is this awfully strange TV station we are watching on some
(pres. high) cable TV channel here in St.Petersburg, Russia!! In
their Nx they often mention Batumi, so I already concluded it to be
Georgian (also with the interesting script they use for their lan-
guage), but I did not find any details. They advertise a homepage at
http://www.ajaratv.com/ but there is nothing yet. About foreign
services, I noticed them only in Georgian (Adsharian?? dunno diff's)
and Russian yet, but as it is such a crazy story, I will keep
watching. Quality is rather poor, by the way, quite a few snow in
the pic, but the TV set is not the best and several channels in a
certain QRG range are not fine, as well. And I don't know how to
read a freq on a TV giving only an on-screen tuning bar. Their
emblem is a golden oval (lying horizontally) with some curve in it.
News, movies, and ajaratv-promotion.

Misc - GUATEMALA - HISTORY
Don`t miss this week`s "This American Life," which includes a long
segment about R. Liberación, the CIA clandestine instrumental in
bringing down the democratic left-wing government of Jacobo Árbenz
in 1954.
(I am not in the habit of listening always to TAL --- one loses
interest after a show becomes *too* successful --- but having failed
to connect with the shows I was looking for at 1800 UT Sat Dec 1,
Riders Radio Theatre, and Schickele Mix, I found myself listening to
TAL on WUWF instead, and I`m glad I did...)
From roughly 9 to 34 minutes into the Dec 1 show is a segment by
Nancy Updike, starting with interviewing Nick Grace (of Clandestine
Radio Watch), who has listened to all 54 tapes of R. Liberación
(accessiblized by FOIA??? Not clear). Numerous clips are included,
but they keep talking over them!!!! Does it never occur to radio
producers that this is extremely irritating and frustrating for
their listeners? Just because you *can* fade down and talk over,
does not mean you *should*!
Some notes I made while listening: R. Liberación announced frequency
of 3420 kilociclos (JBA as they were fading down to talk over). It
was on the air from May to July, 1954, and was nothing but lies,
pretending to broadcast from the jungles of Guatemala; actually, 80
percent of the programs were pre-recorded in Opa Locka, Florida, and
sent by diplomatic pouch to the transmitter site in [Somoza`s]
Nicaragua. However, from June some of the broadcasts were made from
the `field`, evidenced by improperly grounded equipment producing a
constant hum, but still not really from within Guatemala. Broadcasts
started with Guatemalan national anthem, and included chimes typical
of TGW and other stations in that country; slogan: "Dios, Patria,
Libertad".
The broadcasts were really a drama, including a staged fake attack
on the station by government troops, with the station abruptly going
off the air, only to return two days later victoriously claiming
that the government could not keep them off the air. It was really
BS, including seemingly coded messages, and the announcer at one
point referring to an excessively "military" time as "9,300 hours".
But this so shook up the populace, and Árbenz, that he eventually
resigned, only to be replaced by a succession of repressive military
dictators, thanks to us --- spelt U-S, and the CIA.
There is a lot more in the 25-minute item than I have mentioned
here, including recollections of someone who actually listened to
Radio Liberación in 1954, and named one of the announcers, who is
involved in the present government, so many years later. This
American Life is available ondemand via website (tho maybe not
the latest one yet), http://www.thislife.org
