ZIMBAWAWE : Re: SW Radio Africa about to leave SW [not]
Actually, I hear that SWRA got a last-minute reprieve, staying on SW for
one hour at 1700-1800 on 15145. Check it out Wednesday.
(G.Hauser-USA Jun 01, 2005 in DXLD-ML)
SW Radio Africa still on SW
A big surprise was that at 1730-1800* tonight (June 04) I heard SW Radio
Africa (probably via Pinheira, Sao Tome) on 15145 kHz and also at
armchair level with S 9+10 dB and no jamming (SINPO 44544), but some QRM
from 15150. It was earlier announced to close all SW broadcasts on May
31, but at the end of today's broadcast was said: "Although we have
stopped shortwave broadcasts, we continue on this frequency during the
first week of June at 7 to 8 PM Zimbabwe time, besides 1197 kHz MW and
the Internet." Is this new tactics on cheating the Zimbabwean jammers ?
(A.Petersen-DNK Jun 4, 2005 in DXplorer-ML)
SW Radio Africa 15145 kHz should be European powerhouse of Woofferton-UK
300 kW.

wonder if Ludo Maes is on this list, he should know the actual schedule.

This one is peaking about 15dB over 9 at my location and still with some

Nothing here on 15650 at that time either. At 1735 I was on 15670. There

Arabs talk. Sounds also Somali but not like what I've used to hear from
the Somali stations.
The music was HOA, and they announce e-mail "webmaster@xxxxx.com". I
haven't been following these higher frequency clandestines too much, so
this one on 15670 probably is wellknown to you guys. I should brush-up my

Re: SW Radio Africa about to leave SW
If you do hear it, can I pass on a personal request from Gerry Jackson of
SWRA not to publicise it. Gerry writes:
"It's our communications provider trying to help us out by providing one
frequency. But if we advertise it, it'll be jammed out of the water - and
it's only for a few days. And we can't get our news bulletin to it on
time etc etc....
So we're actually pretending it's not happening, although it is, but it
sends out mixed messages."
Please help by showing that the DX/SWL community can act responsibly when
asked to do so.
(A.Sennit-HOL Jun 1, 2005 in DXLD-ML)
"But if it's not publicised then who will listen?" : You obviously have
no idea what it's like living in Zimbabwe. In a country where censorship
is the norm, word gets around very quickly by word of mouth, and is never
written down. All we are asking is that people who have no personal
interest in the situation do not keep mentioning the time and frequency
on public Websites that may be visible inside Zimbabwe. With luck, one of
the broadcasts might get through before the jammers discover it's still
on the air. What you decide to do, of course, is up to you. I am merely
passing on what Gerry Jackson says, and have no desire to get into a
discussion on the issue.
(A.Sennit-HOL Jun 1, 2005 in DXLD-ML)
Well if the word indeed gets around quickly then I'm sure the government
(and jammer(s)) will know as well, which is indeed unfortunate, however,
that's just the way it is.

Finally heard SW Radio Africa sign on 15145 after numerous minutes of
some sad sounding tune at 1713 w/ID and frequency announcements by a

endless guitar/cello mx file. Over and over again. Now from about 1710
heard lovely rhythmic African music, and a feature on a African Zimbabwen

Try it at 1700-1800 UT on powerful Rampisham signal, undoubtedly 500 kW

(W.Büschel-D Jun 1, 2005 in DXLD-ML)
Re: 'not to publicise it' : Why are you being so difficult about this?
The request is straightforward and the station exists to provide vital
information for Zimbabweans, not as a plaything for radio enthusiasts.

SW Radio Africa heard here again today on 15145 at s/on with carrier at

the end of today's broadcast was said: "Although we have stopped

REBELS CONTINUE TO BLOW UP RADIO AND TV MASTS |
Text of press release by Paris-based organization Reporters Sans
Frontieres
(RSF) on 30 May
Reporters Without Borders [RSF] wrote to Colombia's communications
minister today voicing support for a request by Gabriel Morales, the
manager of the privately-owned radio station Latina Estereo 91.3 FM, for
the authorities to rebuild its transmitter in Puerto Asis (in the
southern department of Putumayo) in a different, protected location after
it was blown up for a second time on 25 May.
The press freedom organization also urged the authorities to "deal with
the problem more globally by offering to protect the installations of
radio stations in the Cali region, if they so request."
The letter continued : "The deliberate destruction of a news media's
installations is a direct violation of press freedom if it is done with
the intention of depriving the public of its right to be informed. This
has become common practice in the south of Colombia and must be brought
to a stop as quickly as possible."
Reporters Without Borders added : "The authorities have a duty to deploy
all available resources to ensure that journalists can work freely and
without fear."
Latina Estéreo 91.3 FM was attacked for the first time on 13 February
when two explosions destroyed its antenna and other equipment. The
station was forced off the air for two weeks and its journalists have
been working in a climate of tension ever since.
A car-bomb wrecked 70 per cent the building housing the RCN [Radio Cadena
Nacional] radio and television stations in the city of Cali on 20
February. The Marxist guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia (FARC) claimed responsibility for the attack four days later.
The television broadcasts of RCN and Caracol, another privately-owned TV
network, went off the air in much of Putumayo department following an
attack on a joint relay station near the locality of Mocoa on 2 March.
And on 13 March, a bomb near the town of Florencia (in the southern
department of Caquetá) destroyed an antenna used jointly by local radio
stations Cristalina Estéreo and Espléndida Estéreo, reducing the area
their signals reach.

NEW PRAGUE SITE FOUND FOR RFE/RL |
Text of report in English by Czech news agency CTK
Prague, 10 June: The US embassy in the Czech Republic has confirmed for
CTK that a locality for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) has been
found, in reaction to a statement by Czech Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek
in today's issue of daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD).
Paroubek told the paper that the radio management has already chosen a
locality to move to. Embassy spokesman Jan Krc told CTK that what
Paroubek said is correct. Paroubek discussed RFE/RL with US ambassador to
the Czech Republic William Cabaniss on Thursday [9 June].
"They have already chosen a place where the radio should move, but it is
up to them to disclose it," Paroubek told MfD.
The radio now sits in the building of the former Federal Assembly
(parliament) in the centre of Prague.
RFE/RL has not yet commented on the matter. Spokeswoman Anna Rausova said
last week that the issue had not yet been settled.
According to information from March the final decision should be made at
end-June at the latest. The relocation of RFE/RL, which started to be
spoken about after the terrorist attacks on the United States in
September 2001, is to be approved by US Congress. It is speculated that
localities close to the Zelivsky metro station and the administrative
spaces in Prague-Smichov have been shortlisted.

TECHNICAL PROBLEMS REDUCE VIEWERS OF DEMOCRATIC VOICE OF BURMA TV |
Text of report by Clive Parker, carried by Burmese opposition radio
Democratic Voice of Burma web site on 3 June
A growing number of people in Rangoon are expected to try to tune in to
the Democratic Voice of Burma's [DVB's] new television service this
weekend as they attempt to overcome technical difficulties in receiving
the new channel. Despite making its debut on Saturday, 28 May, many of
Burma's residents are unable to receive its service.
The Oslo-based DVB, operated by Burmese exiles, claims that the signal is
as strong as that of BBC World, and that anyone can access it in Burma.
Sources in Rangoon say the biggest obstacle for viewers trying to watch
this channel is lack of technical know-how.
A satellite television service provider in Rangoon said a small number of
people had asked the channel to be tuned in. The owner of the business
said he is now pre-setting all new satellite dishes to receive DVB's
programmes as part of the service he provides to his customers. "I can't
find the satellite PAS 10 (setting) that transmits DVB television. Other
people may be in a similar situation," said one Rangoon-based journalist.
The military government has not tried to block this station and does not
have the capability to do so, he added.
Another journalist said he has not watched the programme but two friends
had watched it. Although he is not able to give his opinion on the
programme, the journalist has warned that Burmese media groups in exile,
such as the DVB, should be careful and avoid biased reporting. "But we
welcome new media in Burma," he said.
Rangoon's foreign community is increasingly talking about this new
channel. An expatriate living in Burma confirmed that word was beginning
to spread about this service and more people are trying to access it. "I
think it will be seen very soon," he said.
DVB claims that two-four million viewers will watch to start with, before
more find out how to tune in, though evidence suggests that far fewer
have been able to watch this channel so far. The service, which is
broadcast on Saturdays between 0800-0900 p.m. [1330-1430 gmt] and on
Sunday's from 1200-[0100] p.m. [0530-0630 gmt], made its debut last
weekend with a news programme on the mid-May Rangoon bombings, a piece on
Burmese migrants in Thailand, and the first part of a documentary titled
"A force more powerful", which features information on the Burmese
opposition movement. This weekend's programming will feature part two of
the documentary.
The channel said it had received positive feedback about its service this
week, with many viewers asking to see more about the famous exiled
Burmese rocker Mun Awng. Living in Oslo since 1988, the pop star has
since released two albums featuring overtly political content, which were
subsequently banned by the Burmese authorities.
The exiled group is confident that the channel's popularity will
eventually spread to the Burmese government. "If the (ruling) State Peace
and Development Council are willing to watch our news, they will become
part of the DVB's audience," said deputy director Khin Maung Win. DVB's
service can be received via PAS 10, 68.5 degrees east on 3940H, symbol
rate 3000.

Diexismo historico.Clandestina.Radio Euskadi

Fdo.: Antonio

RFE/RL Back on FM Air in Kyiv
(Prague, Czech Republic--May 19, 2005) Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
Ukrainian-language broadcasts can again be heard on FM in Kyiv, after a
break of nearly a year. The Ukrainian capital's most popular radio
station, "Radio Kyiv" began rebroadcasting RFE/RL Ukrainian service
programs on FM 98 on May 9.
RFE/RL president Thomas A. Dine welcomed the launch, saying "this is good
for 'Radio Kyiv' and good for RFE/RL, but above all it is good for
Ukrainian listeners to have access to another source of independent news
and analysis."
Dine also noted that "the revived interest of Ukrainian media in carrying
RFE/RL programs reflects a dramatic change in the media climate in
Ukraine under the presidency of Viktor Yushchenko." Ukrainian Service
programs of RFE/RL were previously rebroadcast on FM by Ukraine's Dovira
national network, but dropped under pressure from the Kuchma regime in
February 2004, prior to the contentious Fall 2004 presidential elections.
"Radio Kyiv" airs RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service programs two hours daily in
prime time. A live morning show, "Morning Liberty," produced in RFE/RL's
Kyiv bureau is on the air from 0600 to 0655 [0300-0355 UTC]. "Evening
Liberty," a nightly, call-in talk show is broadcast five times a week
from 2000 to 2055 hours (1700-1755 UTC). The show is moderated from
RFE/RL's Prague operations center and features two guests of opposing
views in Ukraine. RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service Director Alexander
Narodetsky says" the impact of 'Radio Kyiv' is already significant, with
many listeners from Kyiv calling in comments."
Outside of Kyiv, RFE/RL Ukrainian-language broadcasts can be heard on
shortwave and satellite and, in Kharkiv and several other cities, on FM,
AM, UKW and cable radio frequencies. The Ukrainian Service is actively
working to expand partnerships with other radio stations, in an effort to
achieve nationwide FM coverage for RFE/RL Ukrainian language
broadcasting.
RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service broadcasts nearly 7 hours of programming a day
Monday through Friday, and 3 hours every Saturday and Sunday, with
programs produced in Prague and the service's Kyiv Bureau. Ukrainian
Service programming is available via the Internet, at the service's
website www.radiosvoboda.org and at www.rferl.org. Radio Free
Europe/Radio Liberty is a private, international communications service
to Eastern and Southeastern Europe, Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia,
the Middle East, and Southwest Asia, funded by the U.S. Congress through
the Broadcasting Board of Governors.

listeners about their experiences as well."

15580, VOA via Botswana, 1605-1655, Tu Jun 14, "Talk to America" about
Clandestine broadcasting with Nick Grace and Richard Lafayette. Formerly
people in opposition did set up a clandestine radio station in the
country itself, often using a HAM transceiver. Nowadays most clandestine
broadcasts are from another country, using SW, MW, FM, Satellite TV and
not at least text and audio via the Internet. The first thing oppressed
people do today, is to set up a website to spread their messages. These
broadcasts are still clandestine, because the listeners, viewers and
readers do not know from whom and where these messages are coming. This
phone-in programme mentioned broadcasts to Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia,
Zimbabwe and Vietnam and had some impressive recordings of such
broadcasts. 44444, but deteriorating, heard // 9700 and 9760 which were
poor at start, but improving. Thanks a lot to Victor Goonetilleke for
inviting me to hear this excellent programme.

Re: Self-Introduction: Radio Hoa-Mai (CRW 183)
Time and frequencies??? The referenced website apparently confuses
shortwave and webcasting! Under the
latter it mentions 11555 at 8:30 to 9:00 --- but I don`t know am from pm
in
Vietnamese, so it would either be 0130-0200 UT or 1330-1400, more likely
the
latter if prime time is a consideration.

And re Angel 3 from Hawaii - I am hearing a CNR transmission on 11555
between 1400 and 1500 which I assume has been 'attracted' to the
frequency due to a listed programme called 'Dafa Hao (Mandarin)'. So far
there is no trace of KWHR at my NW England location during this time
period.
Glenn recently enquired about reception of Radio Jordan 11690 in the
European area. Their English service at 1300-1630 is not on air every day
for whatever reason - June 1st was another "off" day. But when it is on
air reception at my location is always good strength and clear of QRM.

SW Radio Africa Switches Frequency
Media Institute of Southern Africa (Windhoek), PRESS RELEASE
June 2, 2005, Posted to the web June 2, 2005
On May 31 2005, SW Radio Africa which broadcasts from London, beamed its
last shortwave evening broadcast saying this was due to repeated jamming
of its transmission signal by the Zimbabwean government.
"The jamming of our transmission signal by the Zimbabwe government has
required that we broadcast on multiple frequencies," SW Radio Africa said
in a statement.
"This has been very successful and our listeners have been able to
clearly receive us. But it is financially unsustainable, adding a huge
amount to our normal running costs."
The station which is manned by Zimbabweans exiled in the UK, is now
broadcasting on medium wave for two hours in the morning (05h00 - 07h00
local time) and 24 hours a day on its website, www.swradioafrica.com. The
medium wave signal does not, however, cover the whole of Zimbabwe and
many of its listeners will not be able to tune into their broadcasts. SW
Radio Africa, however, said it was doing everything possible to maintain
its financial viability.
"Our medium wave signal is clearly received throughout the whole of South
Africa so we do know that the two to three million Zimbabwean exiles
there will be able to clearly receive our programming.
"A free media is the cornerstone of any democracy and we will do our very
best to ensure that we continue to provide a voice for Zimbabweans, as we
struggle along this difficult road to freedom together," said the
statement.

Jammed radio station faces financial squeeze
Independent SW Radio Africa faces a financial crisis after being forced
to find alternative means of reaching audiences in Zimbabwe when the
Harare government jammed their shortwave signals.
The station was forced to shut down its evening shortwave broadcasts on
31 May after repeated jamming. "The jamming of our transmission signal by
the Zimbabwe government has required that we broadcast on multiple
frequencies," SW Radio Africa said in a statement. "This has been very
successful and our listeners have been able to clearly receive us. But it
is financially unsustainable, adding a huge amount to our normal running
costs," station management added. The station, which is manned by
Zimbabweans exiled in the United Kingdom, is now broadcasting on medium
wave for two hours in the morning (05h00 - 07h00 local time) and 24 hours
a day on its website.
