Not bad but with possible TVI-like jamming. (G.Dexter-WI-USA Nov 15, 2006 in DXplorer-ML) Radio Republica 9630 kHz loud and clear here at 0300Z, Nov 16, 2006, no signs of reported jamming, even during a totally silent period of OC. (W.C.Deegan-FL-USA Nov 16, 2006 in HCDX-ML) November 16 at 0124 UTC on 5970 kHz, assumed Radio Republica via WRMI, Miami, unknown location, according to Radio Republica website. (R.Brock-PA-USA Nov 16, 2006 in HCDX-ML) It's not via WRMI which only uses 9955 for that. It's via RMI, using one of the sites in Germany. BTW, as I have reported, RR has another relay now via Sackville, Canada, 02-05 UT Tue-Sat on 9630. [Later: ] The RR website is less than forthright about where their transmissions are coming from. It seems that their broadcasts via Germany, UK, and now probably Canada too only mention their transmissions on 9955 which are really WRMI. RMI also arranges some of their broadcasts via other sites. (G.Hauser-OK-USA Nov 16, 2006 in HCDX-ML) Last night around 0300Z 11/16, I listened for the reported Cuban jamming against Radio Republica on 9630 kHz. No jamming was heard even though it easily is on other Cuban jammed channels from MW through SW day and night, here in SE Florida. I'll have to listen again to see if I can pick it up. However, just after TOH there was a minute or so of open carrier during which there was a brief fade out then back in to the original strong level heard before TOH. When audio resumed mention of Radio Miami International was made followed by the resumption of Radio Republica programming. I assume facilities changes at the broadcast site necessitated the brief TOH drop of the 9630 signal, though no difference in it was noted following the few seconds interruption. The following is from the RMI web site as translated by Babel Fish: --- Schedule of Republica Radio: Daily 1:00-3:00 a.m. hour of Miami in 9955 kHz (31 meters) Monday through Friday 6:00-8:00 a.m. hour of Miami in 9955 kHz (31 meters) Daily 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. hour of Miami in 9955 kHz (31 meters) Monday through Friday 6:00-11:00 p.m. hour of Miami in 5970 kHz (relief via overseas) Monday through Friday 9:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. hour of Miami in 9630 kHz (foreign relief) Saturday and Sunday 10:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. hour of Miami in 9955 kHz (31 meters) --- The distinction is noted between (relief via overseas) for the 5970 kHz broadcasts and (foreign relief) for the reported 9630 kHz Sackville broadcasts -- Canada is foreign to US but not overseas, while European locations would be overseas. (W.C.Deegan-FL-USA Nov 16, 2006 in HCDX-ML) CUBA JAMMING CANADA --- Sackville, that is, now that it is broadcasting Radio República at 02-05 UT Tue-Sat on 9630. Just checked Nov 16 at 0200 and all I hear is jamming, but two nights ago Sackville 9630, and the NQ Service on 9625, were inaudible here tho others in eastern NAm could hear RR. The jamming now is much weaker than RHC on 9550, however. I wonder how 9630 is doing in various parts of ENAm, especially S Florida, and on into the Caribbean and Central America --- is RR on top of the jamming anywhere? [Curt Deegan and Jeff White in S Florida say RR is loud and clear, no jamming audible there. If the jammers skip over S Florida, they are also skipping over most of Cuba, effectiveness limited to groundwave.] Tsk, tsk, Canadá and Cuba were such good friends, and now look what they've gone and done. (G.Hauser-OK-USA Nov 16, 2006 in DXLD-ML) R. República, 6135 via Rampisham UK, Nov 16 at 2245 G with no jamming audible. Altho this 22-24 transmission has been in effect at least since April, it is still missing from HFCC B-06, so is apparently Top Secret as far as VT Merlin is concerned. Ditto 00-02 on 7205 and 02-04 on 7110. I assume the lack of jamming has nothing to do with the lack of registration, as the DentroCuban Jamming Command has hit it before, and the last I checked was also jamming the 7 MHz channels. Could it be that Cuba's jamming capacity is getting spread too thin, so they have to make hard choices? Surely the priority número uno is Radio Martí. Then I tuned in 5970 at 2259 and found open carrier already with DentroCuban jamming as R. República via Germany started up at 2300 with Radio Miami Internacional ID, and half a minute later R. República opening and into "¡Despierta, Cuba! Well above the jamming here. Note: WRMI is not the same as Radio Miami Internacional. RMI brokers programming on various other transmitters, and also runs the SW station in Miami, WRMI, whose call letters apply only to broadcasts from there on 9955 or 7385. I also listened for REE in French to Europe at local midnight, as supposedly scheduled already on 5970 at 2300, but could not hear it in the mix, altho the same to NAm was inbooming on 6055. (G.Hauser-OK-USA Nov 16, 2006 in DXLD-ML) NO SIGNAL - 9630 - No sign of Radio Republica at 0400 check on 11/17, nor on other checks in the 02-05 period supposedly here via Sackville now. Sometimes Cuban jamming but even that is quite weak. I wasn't aware of this potential new site until gh's mention in HCDX. CBCNQS next door on 9625 also not making it the last few days, tho it has always been consistent in the past. (G.Dexter-WI-USA Nov 17, 2006 in DXplorer-ML) Finally checking here for R. República on new 6185, UT Sun Nov 26 at 0020: playing "Guantanamera" as they often do, too often --- yes, it is a quintessential Cuban song, but can't they come up with more variety, more originality? Mixed with heavy DentroCuban jamming, and traces of another station underneath, no doubt poor R. Educación, Mexico, whose squatter's rights to the frequency are a joke to the Big Boys. There was only residual jamming clicking on 7205, which presumably 6185 replaces via Rampisham. No jamming yet on 7110, which may still take over at 0200. Also jamming on 5970, even tho R. República via Germany is silent on weekends. The RR website http://www.radiorepublica.org/ still hasn't been updated, showing outdated A-season times and frequencies, none of the latest changes or additions. Why tip off the jammers? Why not? They already know and if anything, over-jam rather than under-jam. (G.Hauser-OK-USA Nov 26, 2006 in DXLD-ML) ............................................................... "The Herald might have broadened the perspective of the story to report, as El Nuevo Herald and then the Herald later did, that journalists in Washington have taken money from other U.S. government broadcasting outlets, such as the Voice of America. I believe that a journalist cannot take pay from the government or a corporation or interest group he or she covers without suffering a loss of credibility. But the presentation and handling of the Herald's story, in the end, was so heavy-handed and one-sided that it amounted to a missed opportunity to explore the issue with the sensitivity it demanded." "Channels 5 and 31 are being jammed. Georgian special services are using more powerful transmitters to broadcast signals of the Georgian channels Rustavi-2 and Alania TV in place of the [Russian] channels RTR and Vesti broadcast by the communications production association," he said. It should be pointed out that the programming of Alania TV, which claims to be an independent media outlet, is of a clearly subversive nature and is financed entirely by the Georgian special services. The station's director, Vladimir Sanakoyev, is contesting the so-called alternative South Ossetian presidential election [as received; Vladimir Sanakoyev is not standing in the 12 November election, candidate Dmitriy Sanakoyev is], who a year ago was engaged in unsuccessful petty business dealings in Russia. The connection between the Georgian authorities, specifically the Ministry of State Security [as received; the ministry was absorbed into the Georgian Interior Ministry in 2005], the suddenly rosy Russian citizen Vladimir Sanakoyev and attempts to jam South Ossetian television and radio is so obvious that it does not require additional commentary. Misc - HUNGARY - HISTORY HUNGARY. Shortwave radio stations during the Hungarian revolt of 1956. An article just published Hungary, Iraq and shredding machines by Marvin Olasky refers to Radio Free Kossuth using shortwave during the 1956 Soviet intervention which was 50 years ago this Saturday, it also mentions two other stations: http://www.townhall.com/Columnists/MarvinOlasky/2006/11/02/hungary,_iraq_and_shredding_machines I found a recording of Radio Free Kossuth at this site, which has many other historic recordings: http://www.filatelia.fi/dx/ Googling around I found many transcripts of radio broadcasts around that time at this site: http://www.historicaltextarchive.com/books.php?op=viewbook&bookid=13&cid=2 including this from a broadcast of Radio Free Miskolc on October 28th 1956: "Pecs, Györ, Mosonmagyarovar, Miskolc, Debrecen and Nyiregyhaza and others are by now in possession of radio stations. Therefore it is possible to create adequate radio contacts. We suggest contact on 42 and 43 meters shortwave. Miskolc will signal on these wavelengths on every second, even numbered hour. All of you, call on the Soviet troops, in Russian too, not to fight for the suppression of the Hungarian people's legitimate struggle for freedom. We want to regard the Soviet Union as our friend but we want to be independent ourselves. We do not want to be at war with them." My question for any list members who were shortwave listeners at that time or have researched the events is was this use of 42 and 43 metres just for communications between the radio stations themselves or were there other domestic stations, apart from Radio Free Kossuth, transmitting on shortwave so that their messages could not only be heard domestically but abroad? In the book ``Broadcasting Freedom, The Cold War --- Triumph of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty`` by Arch Puddington, Chapter 6 says: "Another source of possible confusion was the dozen or so "freedomstations" that broadcast information about the progress if the revolution from various locations inside Hungary. The Voice of Free Hungary relied on these stations, most of which were regular provincial stations, for firsthand information. In addition since their signals were weak, RFE either summarised the freedom stations' broadcasts or, in some cases, beamed their programmes throughout Hungary over frequencies normally used by RFE. The freedom stations were staffed by revolutionary partisans, notjournalists, and their appeals were often highly emotional, even poignant, as they begged Radio Free Europe to tell the world about the Red Army's atrocities. They beseeched the West for assistance, and they urged their countrymen to continue the struggle, no matter what the odds. Their accounts of fighting were gripping but not necessarily accurate. In retrospect, Griffth [sic] (who was RFE chief policy adviser in Munich) admitted that it may have been a mistake for RFE to have put its facilities at the service of the freedom stations." Misc - KOREA (NORTH) Japan: Media panel approves order to NHK to cover N Korea abductions Text of report in English by Japanese news agency Kyodo Tokyo, 2 November: A ruling party panel effectively approved Thursday [2 November] a plan for the government to order the country's public broadcaster Japan Broadcasting Corp., known as NHK, to feature North Korea's abductions of Japanese nationals in its overseas shortwave radio broadcasts. "We understand the government's zeal over the abduction issue," one member of the Liberal Democratic Party [LPD] panel on telecommunications and broadcasting said, virtually giving the go-ahead for the communications minister to issue the order to NHK. A majority of the LDP panel members had been cautious about the plan but the panel decided in the end to approve it in the face of requests by family members of abduction victims. The latest move is likely to encourage a panel on radio waves under the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry to give the green light to the issuance of the order at its meeting next Wednesday. The move, however, will likely ignite further criticism that such an order would violate the freedom of the press, even though Yoshihide Suga, the communications minister, has said the ministry does not intend to intervene in details of the broadcasts. Suga, attending the LDP panel meeting for the first time, said: "I would like to do whatever I can as a state minister for the resolution of the abduction issue." Article 33 of the Broadcast Law stipulates that the communications minister may order NHK to conduct international broadcasting by designating broadcast matters. North Korea has admitted its agents abducted or lured 13 Japanese citizens to that country in the late 1970s and early 1980s. North Korea returned five of the 13 in 2002 but claimed that the other eight had died - a claim disputed by the Japanese government and their relatives. There are other missing Japanese not yet officially recognized as abductees but thought likely to have been taken to North Korea. Source: Kyodo News Service, Tokyo, in English 0416 gmt 2 Nov 06 (BBCM for CRW) Japan: Group for missing Japanese "disturbed" by government radio plan Text of report in English by Japanese news agency Kyodo Tokyo, 6 November: A private group that runs a radio broadcast service in hopes of finding missing Japanese in North Korea on Monday [6 November] criticized the government's plan to order Japan Broadcasting Corp., the country's public broadcaster better known as NHK, to feature the abduction issue in its shortwave radio broadcasts. "To be honest with you, we're disturbed" by the government's move, Kazuhiro Araki, who heads the Investigation Commission on Missing Japanese Probably Related to North Korea, said at a news conference in Tokyo. "We are grateful if it means support for Shiokaze, but nothing has been explained to us... It has even been misunderstood that we requested (such a government order)," he added. Shiokaze refers to the shortwave radio service Araki's group is running and which was launched in October 2005 to call on North Koreans to provide information on Japanese nationals abducted to the communist country or others missing in a bid to rescue them. Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Yoshihide Suga plans to ask the Radio Regulatory Council, a ministry panel, on Tuesday to discuss whether NHK should emphasize the abduction issue in its shortwave radio service aimed at overseas listeners. The ministry's plan has come in for criticism over its implications for freedom of the press, and on Monday the Japan Congress of Journalists, an association of journalists working in Japan, issued a statement protesting at the move. The group called on the panel not to grant a broadcast order to NHK, saying, "Ordering specific and individual (broadcast) subjects violates the freedom of expression and the press guaranteed under the Constitution." It also asked the public broadcaster to maintain independence from government interference. Article 33 of the Broadcast Law stipulates that the communications minister can order NHK to conduct international broadcasting by designating broadcast matters, but critics say ordering the broadcast of specific subjects, such as the abductions, could infringe on NHK's editorial rights. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, known for his firm stance on North Korea, recently instructed his Cabinet members to take measures to resolve the abduction issue and has defended the plan. Misc - SRI LANKA Sri Lanka: London-based Tamil radio producer interviewed in Swiss prison Excerpt from article by Gamini Muthukumarana:"Powerful anti-LTTE media man in Europe imprisoned in Switzerland", published by Sri Lankan newspaper Divaina on 19 November Veeraiyah Ramraj, who is the producer of the TBC [Thamil Broadcasting Corporation] radio from London, was arrested last February by the Swiss police. Along with Ramraj, a number of Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim Sri Lankan had left London last February for Geneva, Switzerland. The reason for their visit to Switzerland had been to stage a protest against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam [LTTE] during the peace discussions in Geneva. Ramraj was taken into custody during the protest by the Swiss police. According to Ramraj, the police took him into custody due to a manoeuvre by Kulam. Another agent of Kulam had meticulously planned for the Swiss police to arrest Ramraj, based on a false statement to the effect that Ramraj had handed over a firearm to him. It was later revealed by Kulam that Ramraj was an accomplice in a number of murders committed in Switzerland. In order to ascertain the credibility of Kulam's statement, the Swiss police are still conducting investigations. I visited the Orbay [as published] prison in Geneva where Ramraj was detained with some of my colleagues from London. We were officially permitted by the Swiss government to meet the prisoner. On Sunday 22 October we had the opportunity of speaking with the prisoner for almost one hour in the Orbay prison. From the discussion we had with him, we could gather that he had not lost any of his energy or initiative to defeat the LTTE. His faith and his vision to live together with the Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim communities in a bond of friendship, have not forsaken him. [Passage omitted] The fact that the TBC is still operating as usual has given him encouragement, although he is confined to prison. Speaking with a sense of pride, he is confident that as long as listeners in European countries and the Middle East extend their support by listening to the TBC radio broadcasts, it will be a daunting task for the LTTE to suspend his broadcasting. In the words of Veeraiyah Ramraj: "It is our broadcasting service that broadcasts factual news to the Tamil people. Whether the government makes an error or the LTTE makes a mistake, it does not make a difference to us. Unlike certain broadcast and television stations in European countries, we do not try to favour the LTTE in our broadcasts. [Passage omitted] "The TBC has been a great service to the Tamil people. Just as we did during the tsunami disaster, in other situations of such magnitude as tsunami as well, we are committed to a service through European and Middle East people. There are instances when even the LTTE paid heed to our agitations. An example is the matter of Jayadevan who lives in London. Jayadevan worked jointly with the LTTE but thereafter, when he realized the reality of the problem, he left the organization and lived together with other Tamils in London, involving himself immensely in socio-economic activities. On a subsequent date, when he visited Sri Lanka, the LTTE arrested him and attempted to murder him. Thereafter, our TBC broadcasting station, together with anti-LTTE organizations, carried out a mass protest campaign in Europe, which ultimately made the LTTE to release Jayadevan. The LTTE could not kill him. The TBC became a headache to the LTTE to such an extent that in 2002, when peace negotiations were resumed by the Ranil Wickremasinghe government, a request was made by the LTTE for the disbanding of TBC. Following this request, the then President Chandrika Kumaratunga suspended the broadcasting of programmes by the TBC". [Passage omitted] Source: Divaina, Colombo, in Sinhala 19 Nov 06 p 2 (BBCM for CRW) LTTE TERRORIZES ANTI-LTTE RADIO IN LONDON - REPORT According to Tamil sources in North London, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) members in London broke into the premises of the anti – LTTE radio station, the Tamil Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) and vandalized it on the early hours of morning on Saturday. The Asian Tribune says the TBC was planning to broadcast the heroes’ day message by Col. Karuna Amman, the leader of the TMVP, a breakaway group of the organization, to eclipse the hero’s day speech of Prabakaran, the leader of the LTTE who is wanted by Interpol. The newspaper suggests the break-in was a deliberate attempt to sabotage the broadcast. TBC radio is broadcast in Sri Lanka via a local radio network and, according to the Asian Tribune, the LTTE seems to be trying to prevent Sri Lankan Tamils from listening to the thoughts of Karuna Amman, perhaps the most formidable commander of the LTTE, who won many battles for the LTTE before turning against the organization. The Asian Tribune says the LTTE seems to be pursuing a strategy to become the sole radio broadcaster of the Tamils as well as intimidating radio stations which are not aligned to the organization into silence. According to these Tamil sources, broadcasting equipment of the TBC was looted, and equipment which was too heavy to be carried away was destroyed. The police were alerted and investigations are being conducted. The newspaper notes that the radio station had been broken into previously, with the LTTE constantly harassing the staff, management, and supporters of TBC.
