ERITREA : Closure of Radio Station Al-Sharq Eritrea: Closure of Radio Station Al-Sharq, Broadcasting From Sudan; One Journalist Released, Eight Still Held in Police-Run "Agip" Centre in Asmara Reporters sans FrontiËres (Paris) http://allafrica.com/stories/200612010648.html PRESS RELEASE December 1, 2006 Posted to the web December 1, 2006 Reporters Without Borders has disputed Eritrean information minister Ali Abdu's claim that nine journalists arrested on 12 November 2006 have been released, insisting that only one of the nine has been freed and the other eight are still being held. The journalist who was released is Simon Zewde (previously identified as "Simon"), who works for the state television station Eri-TV. The press freedom organisation also condemned Sudanese complicity in Eritrea's press freedom violations, which led to the arbitrary closure in early November of the Eritrean opposition radio station Al-Sharq, which had been broadcasting news in Tigrinya to western Eritrea from the Sudanese capital of Khartoum and the eastern town of Khasm al-Girbah for nine hours a day for the past year. The closure of Al-Sharq is the result of a rapprochement between Asmara and Khartoum after Eritrea played a key role in the signing of an accord with the Sudanese rebel movement operating in the eastern part of the country. On 3 November, Sudan and Eritrea signed an accord under which Sudan will supply its neighbour with oil and cross-border trade will be reestablished. Reporters Without Borders has been able to obtain the exact names and details of all of the detained state media journalists. Some of this information was missing when the organisation first reported their arrests. The eight journalists still being held are Ahmed "Bahja" Idris of Eri-TV, presenter Senait Tesfay of Eri-TV's Tigrinya-language service, Paulos Kidane of Eri-TV's Amharic-language service and Radio Dimtsi Hafash (Voice of the Broad Masses), Daniel Mussie of Radio Dimtsi Hafash's Oromo-language service, Temesghen Abay of Radio Dimtsi Hafash's Tigrinya-language service, Yemane Haile of the Eritrean News Agency (ENA), presenter Fathia Khaled of Eri-TV's Arabic-language service and Amir Ibrahim of Eri-TV's Arabic-language service. Contrary to the information initially received by Reporters Without Borders, these journalists are being held in the capital, Asmara, in a police-run complex that is called "Agip" because the Italian oil company of that name used to have installations there. Located behind the "Capitol" cinema and opposite the presidential palace, this complex is "where the police take detainees to torture them before transferring them to their final destination," a former detainee told Reporters Without Borders. The detained journalists are reportedly in the charge of Col. Simon Gebredinghel and Lt. Col. Tekhelesghi Estifanos. Asked about the arrests by Agence France-Presse on 23 November, the information minister replied: "It was a routine matter and they have been released." Presidential spokesperson Yemane Gebremeskel told the Associated Press on 24 November that he was not aware of the arrests. (allafrica.com Dec 1, 2006 via Z.Liangas-GRC in CDX-ML) This refers to a MW station which was quoted as "Eastern Radio" ("Al-Sharq" means "The East") in the DX press in November 2005: Eastern Radio transmitting to Eritrea on 909 kHz mediumwave --- According to Sudanese newspaper Al-Watan, a new Eritrean opposition station called Eastern Radio has started test transmissions on 909 kHz mediumwave in October. Eastern Radio is said to be broadcasting at 0400-0700 UTC and at 1600-1900 UTC. Officially the station was launched on Eid al-Fitr, a three-day festival marking the end of Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. http://www.dxing.info (Nov 2005) (via B.Trutenau-LTU Dec 3, 2006 in CDX-ML) ------------xxxxxxxxxx Schedules xxxxxxxxxx-------------------- Schedules - CUBA CUBAN EXILE PROGRAMS [all on 9955]: La Voz del MRR, Tu-Sa 0500-0530 Radio Cuba Libre, M-F 0800-1000 Foro Revolucionario, Sat 1200-1230 [¿shouldn`t that be Contra-Revolucionario?] Voz de Coordinadora, Sun 0030-0045, Sun 2300-2315 La Voz del Escambray, Sat 2330-2400 La Nueva Nación, Sun 0000-0030 Conversando entre Cubanos, Sun 0100-0130, Mon 0230-0300 Radio Oriente Libre, Mon 0130-0230 Trova Libre [music], Mon 0000-0030 Radio República, Daily 0600-0800, 1600-2200; M-F 1100-1300, 2200-0200 Tu-Sa, Tu-Sa 0400-0500, Sun/Mon 0300-0500 (WRMI via G.Hauser-OK-USA Dec 4, 2006 in DXLD 6-179) ............................................................... Martí on 17660, this time during the hour it allegedly occurred, at 1618, but heard only WYFR in Portuguese, which is via Ascension. Could someone have mistaken that for R. Martí in Spanish?? Either that or RM made a one-off test of this frequency; PWBR "2006" listed 17670 as a winter frequency for them. (G.Hauser-OK-USA Dec 4, 2006 in DXLD 6-179) R. Martí has already gone into holiday-greeting mode, e.g. at 1530 Dec 5 on 15330, with Xmas and even New Year wishes a bit early, from various staffers, some of whom, such as technicians, speak Spanish with gringo accents. Then found a new frequency, 11750, at 1536 Dec 5, much stronger than // 15330, 13820 and 11930, and at first seemed jamming-free, but still going after 1600 I could hear it building up, so the DentroCuban Jamming Command is on the ball when it counts. Was interviewing an ex-political prisoner. From the strength, I would assume 11750 is Delano, but audio on all four was synchronized, the others being much more heavily jammed from this perspective. At 1600, 11750 had more holiday greetings. Not rechecked until 1754 when 11750 was off. Could be that R. Martí has decided to try the `floating transmitter` tactic against jamming, showing up on unannounced and unexpected frequencies, e.g. the previous report of their being on 17660 during the 1600 hour which I have not been able to confirm since; and Dec 5 that was just WYFR Portuguese via Ascension as usual. Martí on 5890 after 0800, and I wondered if that was a typo for 5980, but no, in fact heard here on 5890 at 0710 UT Dec 6, VG signal, presumably Delano and no jamming audible; meanwhile heavy jamming against nothing on former frequency after 0700, 5980. Radio Martí still is not posting a B-06 schedule on its website http://www.martinoticias.com/frequencies.htm --- much less any updates to it. Also looked for 11750 at 1613 UT Dec 6, but unlike the day before, no signal from R. Martí, alhto it could have been on before 1600. Cursory check of other frequencies in this and other bands did not find another anomalous RM frequency at the moment. (G.Hauser-OK-USA Dec 6, 2006 in DXLD-ML) Dec 7 after 0700 checked out the R. Martí 50-meter situation. Last night was on 5890 free of jamming, but now heavily jammed. Also heavy jamming on former frequency 5980, and could not be sure whether RM was also on there. Still on jammed 6030 as always. Once again, no show for R. Martí on 11750 at 1502 check Dec 7, unlike 48 hours earlier. Contrary to the report from Yímber Gaviria, R. Martí is not on 7405 now continuously from 12 to 22 UT: Dec 7 at 1903 check, all I heard was an Army MARS net around 7404 in SSB, so 7405 is obviously not available all day to OCB, even tho in winter it might work well to the target from Greenville. (G.Hauser-OK-USA Dec 7, 2006 in DXLD-ML) R. Martí continues to play cat & mouse with the DentroCuban Jamming Command at 0700 UT. Dec 8, RM was back on 5980 over jamming, while jamming resources were split to cover 5890 as well, where it has been off and on previous nights. At 0256 I could barely detect some Cuban jamming on frequency and nothing else; at 0259 the jamming started to build up rapidly, and at 0300 some station came on, but it certainly wasn`t Radio República. Aside from the jamming, its audio was very distorted, and I couldn`t be sure of the language, but unseemed Spanish or English, as M&W were talking for a few minutes. At 0304 thought I heard ``traffic report`` and into rock music. Maybe it is a pirate, or something relayed by mistake, but why would Cuba jam it? Maybe on a previous occasion some exile broadcaster such as RR did show up here. (G.Hauser-OK-USA Dec 7, 2006 in DXLD-ML) I did not check 6100 until about 0318 UT. Mostly jamming, but some music and talk underneath. Hope somebody can get more info on what this is, where it is comming from, and why it is being jammed. While I was at it I checked the R. Republica frequencies; nothing audible, RR or jamming on 6185; a little bit on 5970. But the Sackville relay was coming in on 9630, fading up and down sometimes atop the jamming, first time I`ve heard it. RCI 9755 in Spanish was also audible in a similar fashion without the jamming. (G.Hauser-OK-USA Dec 7, 2006 in DXLD-ML) Here`s a theory: another screwup at VTC/Merlin control in London. Originally or supposed to be Radio Republica, thus the jamming; but somehow puts PLANET ROCK on there. Like Israeli TV instead of Voice of Vietnam via Austria. Maybe someone can find neighboring satellite feed channels. Or since PR is not live, maybe they just grab the wrong audio files. If this goes on, wonder if it is the SAME PR hour night after night? The new www.radiofarda.com, launched this week, is updated around the clock with an average of more than 60 Persian-language news items and features in a 24-hour period. Drawn from Radio Farda's 24-hour radio broadcasts, news items can be accessed both as text and as audio. In addition, an online staff in Prague and Washington provides special coverage for the website of breaking news, unique online interviews with Iranians, and in-depth special features and background information on the nuclear controversy and other key issues. Section headings such as Iran, the World, Arts and Culture, Sports and Entertainment make information easy to find. Visitors to www.radiofarda.com can read, listen and interact with Radio Farda through moderated discussions and blogs found in the Farda Club section of the website, as well as by making use of the site's "Most Popular" and "Most Emailed" story lists. These last two features provide Radio Farda broadcasters instant feedback demonstrating the appeal of Radio Farda to young Internet users. For example, in the first 30 minutes that the site was available to the public, in the middle of the night in Iran, some 500 visitors looked at a story about a student protest at Amirkabir University in Tehran, shooting it to the top of the Most Popular list. To circumvent the Iranian government's ongoing and aggressive efforts to block access to Radio Farda's site, several special features, including eight RSS channels and four daily podcasts, allow users to automatically receive the latest updates from Radio Farda to their desktops. The website's online subscription service has also expanded to offer topic-driven daily emails and daily news feeds, as well as information to help the audience get around the censors. In spite of Tehran's censorship, according to latest figures, www.radiofarda.com is visited nearly one million times a month by more than a quarter of a million unique visitors, who view more than three million pages a month. An estimated eight per cent of all internet users inside Iran visit Radio Farda's website - more than two-thirds of whom are young people in the 18-29 age group. Radio Farda, a joint project of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and Voice of America (VOA), is a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week service. Produced in Washington, DC and Prague, Czech Republic and transmitted to listeners via AM, shortwave and satellite, Radio Farda features fresh news and information at least twice an hour, with longer news programming in the morning and the evening. Radio Farda also broadcasts popular Persian and Western music. Radio Farda programming is available via the internet, at the service's website www.radiofarda.com and at www.rferl.org; English-language news about events in Iran can be found on the RFE/RL website. To learn more about Radio Farda and its coverage of events in Iran, read and subscribe to "Focus on Farda". Salih al-Masri, director of Al-Quds Radio (102.7 FM), said the radio has introduced new improvements to its transmitter to cover several towns in the Gaza Strip. However, correspondents and listeners have reported that that the radio is also heard in the Egyptian town of Al-Arish as well as the West Bank towns of Hebron, Ramallah, Nablus, Jenin, Tulkarm, Bethlehem, and occupied Jerusalem. He added that the main aim of boosting the transmission is to reach the Palestinian detainees held in the occupation's prisons who are denied visits by their relatives. The radio constitutes a link of continuity between the detainees and their families and relatives. It should be recalled that 14 radio stations operate from the Gaza Strip. They are the Al-Quds, Al-Shabab, Al-Hurriyah, Al-Ummal, Al-Jamahir, Al-Sha'b, Al-Aqsa, Al-Iman, Alwan, GAZA FM, Al-Manar, Voice of Palestine, Al-Iradah, and the Holy Koran radios. Al-Quds Radio has a high popularity rating because it adopts neutrality and professionalism in its work and advocates national unity. It has a specialized professional team. It dedicates its transmission to serving the Palestinian issue, addressing political and social issues, and broadcasting patriotic songs. Al-Quds Radio had announced earlier that it would soon been broadcasting on the internet. The move came after communications minister Yoshihide Suga last month issued an unprecedented and controversial order for Japan Broadcasting Corp., or NHK, to air programmes on North Korea's abductions of Japanese nationals in its shortwave radio service. The government has also decided to give financial support to the Investigation Commission on Missing Japanese Probably Related to North Korea, a private group, for its operation of another shortwave radio service called "Shiokaze," which sends family messages to possibly surviving abductees. The latest decision apparently reflects Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's policy to focus attention on the abduction issue. The contents of the new programme will be produced by the Japanese government, which will entrust broadcasters mainly in South Korea to air them, the sources said. In explaining the significance of airing such radio programmes, Suga said, "It's the greatest hope for abduction victims in North Korea to know families in Japan and the Japanese government have not given up on them." Presenter Mandisa Mundawarara was highly commended in the award category for International Presenter of the Year. The awards were presented at a gala dinner in London on November 22. Attended by senior executives, producers and journalists from TV and radio channels from five continents, the AIB Awards event rewarded the very best programmes and channels for international audiences across television and radio. There were nine award categories and over 100 entries from international broadcasters in 20 countries and SW Radio Africa was in stellar company. Other award winners included the BBC, which won various categories including Best Radio Coverage of a Single News Event for its coverage of the South Asian Earthquake as well as winning International TV Station of the Year. Sky News picked up the award for Best TV Coverage of a Single News Event for its coverage of the London bombings while Al Jazeera received the award for Best Magazine TV Program. SW Radio Africa were described as "a brave, and excellent independent alternative to Zimbabwe's state media." The AIB awards are the only ones that celebrate excellence in international cross-border broadcasting, judged by an international panel of broadcasting experts, including professional TV and radio critics from leading newspapers. SW Radio Station said in a statement Friday: "We are very pleased to know that our peers have recognised the quality of our programming. All we have ever tried to do is broadcast well produced programmes into Zimbabwe so that listeners feel informed and entertained. "Unfortunately the government doesn't see it like that and has gone to enormous expense to jam our signal in the main centres. "What a tragedy that Zimbabwe's best journalists and broadcasters have been forced to base themselves outside the country and that our government doesn't celebrate our achievements. We look forward to the day when we are out of a job, and can go home and help rebuild our shattered nation." The radio project is meant to help rural communities in remote parts of the country access external radio broadcasts, independent of state propaganda. On Tuesday [5 December] however the spokesman for the Tsvangirai MDC, Nelson Chamisa, told Newsreel the government is targeting everyone with a shortwave radio in the rural areas. He says government deliberately wants to impose, "an iron curtain in the country and contaminate people with their propaganda". Chamisa says their national office is inundated with complaints from people who have had their radios taken away and their information department is busy compiling a list of all the reported cases. Initially it had been thought radios donated to listening clubs were the prime target but by Tuesday the seizures had become indiscriminate with many people said to have lost their own private portable radio sets. Listening club members are being threatened and told they are selling out the country by listening to "foreign" broadcasts. Several NGO's donated solar powered, wind up radios for the listening clubs and Chamisa says although these are being targeted, the regime now believes it can reduce the number of shortwave radio listeners via a programme of indiscriminate national seizures. In Mberengwa East and the Midlands North province the CIO clearly targeted listening clubs. Several teachers, who are members of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) and had been identified as team leaders, had their radios taken away. They were asked to produce union membership cards before the CIO confiscated the donated radios last week. Police and CIO officers are being accused of trying to block the Radio Communication Project by taking any donated radios under the pretext of investigating 'suspicious' content inside. Attempts to distribute eight radios in Mberengwa East attracted the attention of the CIO in much the same way as happened in Gokwe. Under the Radio Communication Project communities are being organised to train, and take turns as groups, to listen to local and external broadcasts of their choice. Radios are being distributed to key local people who have been identified as such by the communities themselves. Thomas Shoko, one of those who received a radio under the project, had this taken away from him by CIO officers at Mataga growth point last Thursday while Sarudzai Dube, the local Women's Clubs Trainer, also had a radio taken away from her over the weekend. Security agents came to her house while she was away and threatened her child into handing over the radio. Sicino Dube, the Tsvangirai MDC Midlands South provincial chairman, also alleged that Zanu PF youths are helping the CIO by moving around villages and taking the shortwave radios away.
