Logs - CUBA Radio Martí Air Martí 530 -- it's there! --- Sitting on 530 kc/s since 2249 GMT today, 16 February. Radio Cadena Habana of course loud and clear, but at exactly 2300, Air Martí up with the usualsignature tune, ID, into news and actualities, all very weak under Cadena Habana. So, the unknown is: has it always been there since the new "private" aircraft took over for the EC-130's, and my earlier winter reception path didn't let the signal come through? Suspect it was not active initially, though for how long it has been back I can't say, as this is my first dedicated check in several weeks at this time. And note this reception is on a local Friday. Previous broadcasts were usually Saturdays, though occasionally Fridays. I need to check to see if that's still the case, or if it could even be daily now. (T.L.Krueger-FL-USA Feb 16, 2007 in DXLD 7-021) FLORIDA, 530, Air Martí 2300+ 17 February, 2007. A no-show on Saturday (heard yesterday at 2300 opening, presumably from the new 'privately contracted' airframe source. (T.L.Krueger-FL-USA Feb 17, 2007 in DXLD 7-022) Radio República Radio Republica: The best reception at 2-3 UTC on February 21 on 6100 kHz. It sounds very much an extension of Radio Marti. The rethoric is similar and even the announcers appear cookie- cutter sort Radio Marti clones. They announced a Florida address to report the station. Lowe Europa; LW about 25 meters with MFJ tuner. (F.Mota-OK-USA Feb 21, 2007 in HCDX-ML) R. República may be changing its never-published schedule again. Someone reported hearing it at 0200 on 6100, while that frequency had been in use only at 0300-0400. (Looking for that report again, however, I haven`t found it. I suspected the time was off by one hour.) Feb 22 at 2357 I tuned to 6135, the 22-24 UT channel, to hear the frequency change announcement, and they said they were moving at that time to 6100 (instead of the usual 6185). So I went to 6100 and heard instead some other station in Spanish which cut off abruptly at 2359 in the middle of a sentence with no ID. That was surely RCI Sackville, which forfeits the last 5 minutes of its 2305 UT Spanish to North America broadcast, which really runs until 0005 due to the wacky offset of its immigrant service to the USA --- the tail end perhaps picked up on the next frequency, 9755, which I did not check. Then before 2400 I retuned to 6185, and RR was already on that frequency still instead of 6100, but maybe they are moving to 6100 earlier than 0300, or earlier than 0200? I doubt it, since RCI Spanish to Central America is scheduled on 6100 at 01-02. Presumably the 2357 UT QSY announcement was wrong, unless I heard it wrong, but I don`t think so. The less on 6185, the better, for poor R. Educación, México DF. 6100 does appear to be available in the Western Hemisphere at 00-01 and 02-03 per HFCC listings. Both 6135 and 6185 had the usual dentroCuban jamming altho RR was atop. No jamming at this time on 6100. These particular R. República transmissions are the ones via VT Communications (Merlin), no connexion with WRMI, which were originally all from Rampisham UK altho lately the 6100 broadcast after 0300 appeared to switch to Sackville. Would appreciate people checking which frequency they are really using at 0100+ and 0200+ (G.Hauser-OK-USA Feb 22, 2007 in DXLD-ML) 22.19 UTC - 6135 kHz RADIO REPUBLICA - relay Rampisham (UK) Spagnolo, dibattito OMs. Segnale buono-molto buono 'Bella' idea trasmettere sulla stessa frequenza di due radio locali sudamericane. (A.Petersen-DNK Feb 25, 2007 in DW-Window 319) Had another try at R. República`s frequency change announcement at the end of the 6135 transmission, Feb 26 at 2357. A few days earlier I thought they said they were about to move to 6100 [seis mil cien], but now it`s clearer that they are saying 6010 [seis mil diez]! --- Which IIRC was their original frequency at 0000 when they started about a year ago, but long out of use. How can they be so FUBAR? Furthermore, they still have not managed to coordinate their programming with frequency changes, as at 2358 with 6135 still on the air, another program started, "Hablando en Serio", until automatic cutoff at 2359:30. Quick retune to the real successor channel, 6185, and that show continued, having started on the previous frequency. I could not identify the second station on the channel. I could get acceptable reception with the "narrow" filer of the DE-1103 and tuning to 17633 kHz. I am no expert in finding exact frequencies but after playing for a while with the BFO my bet is that Sawt al Amal was roughly on 17632.5 kHz. At around 1258 UTC I found them now on around 17620 kHz again with strong het, same situation as before but 10 kHz below. This time I would say they were on 17622.5 kHz. Did someone else tune to this station today? Is it possible that they were on a split frequency or am I too imaginative? (J.Miguel Romero-E Feb 28, 2007 for CRW) As indicated by other reporters, Sawt al-Amal is now using frequencies between the standard channels. Today Feb 28 it was first on 17622.5, then 17627.5 and finally 17637.5 (measured using an NRD 535 in SSB position). The Libyan bubble jammer could only tune in full kHz steps, so caused a 500 Hz beat with Amal. The TDF jammers were barely audible today due to poor propagation, but seem to park on the 5 kHz channels adjacent to each side of Amal. 17660 with Afropop was active as usual with about normal signal strength. 17630 is a mess with DW and (presumed) ANO mixing Nothing on 17725 1200-1400 today, but on other days Libya in Swahili has been there with audio quality similar to 17660, not the usual buzz via TDF. (O.Alm-S Feb 28, 2007 in DXLD 7-027) José Miguel Romero monitoring at the same time did not report any split-kHz frequencies, but instead 17627, 17637, 17663, 17693, which I suppose were rounded off. SAA using frequencies exactly halfway between 5-kHz channels would be more advantageous if the jammers could not get closer than 2.5 kHz, but at 0.5 kHz the jamming would be just as effective unless some of the Libyan audience have receivers with very narrow selectivity. Earlier, Moisés Knochen, Uruguay, did estimate them at 2.5 kHz off (G.Hauser-USA Feb 28, 2007 in DXLD 7-027) ............................................................... Misc - GERMANY Ernst Zundel sentenced to 5 years for Holocaust denial http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2007/02/15/zundel-germany.html Last Updated: Thursday, February 15, 2007 | 8:58 AM ET CBC News A German court on Thursday convicted Ernst Zundel of 14 counts of incitement of racial hatred and sentenced him to five years in prison, the maximum allowed under German law for denying the Holocaust. The Canadian Jewish Congress said it is satisfied with the sentence, with chief executive Bernie Farber saying it sends a strong message around the world. The German-born Zundel lived in Canada for four decades, making frequent court appearances to argue for the freedom to express his anti-Semitic views in books and pamphlets, and on a website. He was deported to Germany in 2005 after a Federal Court judge ruled he was a threat to national security. He was immediately arrested upon arrival in his birth country and held without bail because German authorities considered him a flight risk. Several European countries have passed laws making Holocaust denial a specific criminal offence, including Germany, Austria, Belgium, Poland, Spain and France. In Canada, Holocaust denial can be prosecuted as a hate crime. In the closing statement at his trial, Zundel continued to deny the killing of six million Jews and said the German court should set up an international commission of experts to examine the Holocaust A well-known Holocaust denier, Zundel operated a Nazi propaganda publishing house from Canada and wrote for a website that espoused anti-Jewish sentiments and questioned whether six million Jews had died in the Holocaust. The author of such works as The Hitler We Love and Why, Zundel had been held in solitary confinement for two years in a Toronto jail under a national security certificate before being deported. In 2005, a Federal Court ruling that Zundel was a threat to national security because of his connection with white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups paved the way to his extradition. (CBC News Feb 15, 2007 via F.Waterer-CAN in ODXA-ML) A good investment': Cost of sending Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel to Germany: $130,000 Adrian Humphreys, National Post Published: Thursday, February 15, 2007 Tuesday, June 14, 2005 It cost the Canadian government about $130,000 to fly Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel to his native Germany, where he remains in prison. The cost of the forced removal, after Zundel was declared a dangerous white supremacist by a Federal Court of Canada judge, includes the chartering of a private jet for the March 1 flight, a $365 catering bill for the passengers, and hotel and overtime bills for three escorting officers, according to documents released to the National Post under the Access to Information Act. Misc - KOREA (NORTH) Japan/North Korea: Balloons to be used to help find abductees Text of report by Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun website on 27 February "The Investigation Commission on Missing Japanese Probably Related to North Korea [COMJAN]" (led by Kazuhiro Araki) is planning a "balloon project" - flying balloons to North Korea to call for of information about abduction victims. The COMJAN will reportedly fly "the first batch" [of balloons] from South Korea in March. When a South Korean NGO sent flyers by this means before, the North Koreans reportedly filed petitions with the South Koreans 14 times. Therefore, the COMJAN considers this approach to have a "considerable effect". According to the COMJAN, the balloon is approximately five meters long and made of agricultural vinyl. The balloon will hang three bags of leaflets, and will be set with a timer. It will distribute flyers three times with time lag in the sky above North Korea. Depending on the direction and velocity of wind, the balloon is expected to reach Pyongyang in approximately four hours if it is sent from a site near the DMZ [de-militarized zone]. It is said that the balloon is hardly detected by radar because of its construction. Since the balloons can be flown to the required area, the group aims to fly it to an urban district like Pyongyang, so that many people will see it. The 13 by 10.5 cm leaflets are also made of waterproof vinyl. The COMJAN prepared approximately 100,000 of them. The message is written in Korean and Japanese, calling on the North Korean residents to listen to the shortwave radio "Shiokaze," which the COMJAN is transmitting to North Korea. The leaflets also call on North Korean residents to provide information about the abductees, with the COMJAN contact information and details describing the group's "reward" of over 10,000 dollars. The South Korean NGO, "United North Korean Christian Refugees " has been sending leaflets for about two years using this method. North Korea has filed protest [against sending the leaflets] many times. The fact that the leaflets were found in Pyongyang has been confirmed, and it has become an issue. In North Korea, people only have access to government-controlled radio or television programmes. It is therefore extremely difficult to obtain outside information. The COMJAN says, "Sending the leaflets seems to be a primitive action, but it is a sure method of directly appealing to the North Korean residents". The COMJAN representative Araki says, "There is a risk in [offering] rewards, but we would like the North Korean residents to protect the abduction victims by collecting information of victims using every possible means."
