AFGHANISTAN : Afghan Taleban Radio gains in popularity Text of article in English entitled: "Shar'iat Ghag Radio's listeners increasing" by Afghan newspaper Kabul Weekly on 4 July A resident of Zormat district of Paktia province says that one night, as they were tuning into their radios, they suddenly heard the Shar'iat Ghag (Voice of Sharihat) radio programmes. The man, who asked to remain anonymous, said that since then, whenever they listen to the radio, they are reminded of the Taleban regime. He added that he had recently understood that a lot of people were listening to this radio station. The radio airs Taleban poems, massages and their propaganda against the government. The station can be heard until 8 or 9 pm on FM88.00, in Khost, Paktia, Ghazi and other provinces. Zabiollah Mojahed, a spokesman for the Taleban, speaking from an unknown place over the phone, said that their radio station started to broadcast two weeks ago. The Taleban are planning to expand their coverage to attract more listeners. Local officials in Paktia confirmed the existence of the radio station, but Rahmatollah Rahmat, the governor of Paktia, speaking to Kabul Weekly, said that he knows the station is operating but has not listen to it personally. Mr Rahmatollah Rahmat also added that he was trying to find out about the location of the radio and its staff, but is yet to have any findings. Officials at the Ministry of Information and Culture also corroborate the existence of this radio station. A spokesperson for the ministry, Naseri Wardag, told Kabul Weekly that they have ordered the police to ban the broadcasts of this station. "I do not think that the station has anything new to say because the massage that the Taleban want to give to the people are mostly broadcast through the media in Kabul. Therefore, I hope that the radio station will not be harmful," said Mr Wardak, adding that he believes that the police will close down the radio station soon. Some people who have listened to Shar'iat Radio say that they think the station is somewhere in Zormat district of Paktia province. They also claim that the station is mobile because sometimes it can be heard clearly in one location and sometimes in another. PALESTINE : New station : Corner of the Palestinian Voice 756 A new clandestine station from Israel to Palestine. Just got back from Alexandria - about 300 kms north of Cairo - which is my place for MW DXing. Checking 756 kHz which is always carring Almachrek Radio, the clandestine station from Israel to Lebanon, I noticed a new ID for a station ID in Arabic - "Rokn Alsout Alfalasteniy" - in English it means the "Corner of the Palestinian Voice", first time to hear it on June 22 with verious programs about the Palestinian current situation specially after HAMAS took over the rule of Gaza. They transmit twice daily as they announce temporary on 756 kHz. Daily 0700-0800 AM 1500-1600 PM Jerusalem time - 0400-0500 UT and 1200- 1300 UT - they also announced the Website http://www.pal-voice.org/ It's a quite strange mix to be honest listening to the programs they repeat the morning transmission at the afternoon. Some of the programs are - between us - which sounded like a political commentary criticizing the current stiuation in Gaza and HAMAS. Also a program called - lady - dedicated to the fashion and make up stuff! with some English hits in between as well, some of the other programs are to the point and Abu Mahmoud. The main announcers of the programs are the same announcers of Almachrek Radio and BTW I hear the same announcers on Program D of KOL specially the current affairs programs. same source!? One more note WRTH 2007 stated that the sign on of Almachrek Radio is at 0430 UT, but actually it starts at 0500 UT right after the corner of the Palestinian Voice, same with the sign off when Almachrek Radio signs off at 1200 UT, the corner of the Palestinian Voice starts the afternoon transmission. KOREA NORTH : New station : Furusato no Kaze - Wind of Homeland Japan launches radio for North Korea abductees Text of report in English by Japanese news agency Kyodo Tokyo, 9 July: The government will begin a daily shortwave radio programme late Monday [9 July] aimed at Japanese abductees possibly surviving in North Korea, it said. The 30-minute programme will broadcast voices of the families of abductees and also carry information on the international situation surrounding North Korea and Japan's efforts to save the abductees. The programme will be aired both in Japanese and Korean, each for 30 minutes, and its contents will be renewed every week, government officials said. The government declined to reveal other details including the time of broadcasting and frequency, citing the possibility that the service may be subject to jamming by North Korea. Source: Kyodo News Service, Tokyo, in English 0631 gmt 9 Jul 07 (BBCM via CRW) According to Mr.Tohru Yamashita of Asian Broadcasting Institute, the first government's shortwave broadcast "Furusato no Kaze"(Wind of Homeland) started transmission at 1600-1630 in Japanese on 9780 kHz on July 9. The contents were; explanation of the recent Japanese government's action to the North Korean abduction issues, the voices from the families of abducted Japanese citizens. The second transmission in Korean was observed at 1700-1730 on 9820 kHz. The contents were the Korean translations of the first broadcast at 1600-1630. The name of the station was called "Ilpone Palam"(Wind of Japan), which was different from the Japanese transmission. The first broadcast in Japanese was well heard in Tokyo, but the second broadcast in Korean was not so well, probably due to the different direction. The correspondents in Kyushu, Japan, Shengyang, China and Seoul, Korea reported that the Korean broadcast was well heard in their areas. The same programs will be repeated for a week. The transmitter doesn't sound at all like the old Radio Polonia transmitters, so is it certain that this transmission is direct from Poland? Interesting jingle, 'Lay, lay, lay, Moya krajina Belarus'. (W.Salmaniw, Gdynia-POL Jun 23, 2007 in CDX-ML) Re: POLAND 6105: Acc. to Radio Racja, the site is still Warsaw. The transmitters in Warsaw were not owned by the former Radio Polonia, but by the telecom operator TP Emitel. The Racja prgr is produced and fed in a different way than the Radio Polonia prgrs were, probably this makes a difference in the output result as well. Also, not every of the old Tesla txs used to behave in the same way, plus the audio problems always were less distinct at a closer range. For example, when listening in Warsaw, the typical audio problems were almost not noticable at all. (A.Slaen-ARG Jun 30, 2007 in HCDX-ML) July 4 I had a chance to listen to Open Radio for North Korea, via KWHR 9930. In English at tune-in 1127, I first did not realize what it was. Woman with some news of S. Korea, then same item translated into Korean read by a man (not merely a voice-over, but entire items each). This went on for several minutes, always with music bed, potted up between items for dramatic stingers; something about Arroyo and the Philippines, 1131 on the World Series of Poker 2005! As if that could be news a biyear later? And at 1133 about Mariah Carey`s comeback with her alter-ego "Emancipation of Mimi" number 4 on the Billboard chart. When did this happen, really? Google search points to April 2005 when it was released. So ORNK is passing off two-year old stuff as news? Well, sure, they are a bit behind in Korea North with what is going on and have a lot of catching up to do thanks to ORNK. It`s unclear why they are doing the English. If they gave the items in Korean first, and English second, the latter might be useful for English learning. The English/Korean alternation was over at 1135 when a YL Korean announcement, ID? aired, then 1136 a long discussion in Korean recorded in an echoey room; by 1143 the signal was much weaker, and at 1157 Pomp & Circumstance was interrupted by KWHR ID and frequency change announcement. However, after 1200 I could not hear anything on 12130 when Hoa Mai Radio in Vietnamese was scheduled to air via Hawaii on Wednesday. Misc - KOREA (NORTH) JAPAN STARTS RADIO BROADCASTS TO NORTH KOREA ON ABDUCTIONS TOKYO (AP) -- Japan began making propaganda radio broadcasts in North Korea bout international affairs Monday intended to reach out to Japanese abductees living in the communist country. The hour-long programs on short-wave radio -- 30 minutes each in Korean and Japanese -- will be repeated daily for a week before being updated, the Cabinet Office said in a statement. The government broadcasts come as Tokyo steps up pressure on Pyongyang over its former abduction of Japanese citizens to train communist spies in Japanese language and customs. North Korea has admitted taking 13 Japanese, and in 2002 it released five to return home, saying the remaining eight had died. But the issue remains a sore spot because the Japanese government believes those eight may still be alive, and suspects more of its citizens may have been abducted. The dispute has stymied attempts to establish diplomatic relations between the neighboring nations. The new broadcasts are meant to cheer up any surviving abductees in North Korea with music, voices of relatives back home and reports on international affairs and relations between Japan and North Korea. The Cabinet Office said it was not releasing the time of thebroadcasts or their radio frequency in order to avoid having the signal jammed by North Korean authorities. Other reports suggest no Kaze is coming via Taiwan, as it seems to mesh with other Korean clandestine broadcasts from there. If so that means VTC (Merlin) is brokering, like RFNK and RFC. Story below specifies that site is outside Japan. The NETTV link above launches a well-produced 8-minute video in English about this. The 30-minute shortwave program, to be aired both in Japanese and Korean, will also provide information on events surrounding Japan and North Korea for ordinary North Koreans, the Japanese Government said in a statement. "The Government will send messages from their families and (information on) its efforts to repatriate the abductees," the statement said. The broadcast will also explain Japan's position on the kidnapping issue while calling on ordinary North Koreans to provide information on the alleged abductees and to help to ensure their safety, it added. The radio program, to be updated every week, will also air songs that were popular in the 1970s and would probably be familiar to any surviving kidnap victims. The Government did not reveal any further details, including the time and frequency, for fear that North Korea may try to interfere in the broadcast, which will be made from an undisclosed location outside of Japan. North Korean defectors as well as a non-governmental organisation helping families of alleged abductees also have radio broadcasts to the communist state, but this is the first service directly involving Japan's Government. North Korea admitted in 2002 it kidnapped Japanese civilians in the 1970s and 1980s to train the regime's spies. It returned five abductees and their families and says the issue is resolved, but Japan says more victims are alive (via D.Onley-HOL BDX via DXLD 7-080) ANOTHER STATION IS AIMED AT NORTH KOREA The latest radio station to start broadcasting to North Korea was launched by the Japanese government on 10 July, and has a very specific target audience; Japanese citizens who were abducted by the North Koreans. The Japanese government says that 17 of its people were abducted in the 1970s and 1980s, apparently to train North Korean spies in Japanese customs and language. North Korea admits to taking 13, and in 2002 released five to return home, saying the remaining eight had died. Japan disputes this and suspects that other Japanese citizens may also be being held against their will. The station is seen as part of a concerted effort by the Japanese to resolve the matter. Japan is worried that the issue will be sidelined as the world concentrates on trying to end North Korea's nuclear programme. Japan's broadcaster NHK World website said the new station will to be transmitted by "a private broadcaster". Japanese officials have not released transmission details of the station in order to reduce the chances of it being jammed. The programmes are likely to anger the North Korean authorities who deny that any foreign nationals that were seized are still in their country. This concealment of transmission details may foil the jamming for a while, but could also reduce the station's effectiveness as listeners will have difficulty tuning in to it. The NHK website says the nightly broadcasts will consist of Japanese and Korean programmes, each 30 minutes long with the content updated weekly. Content will consist of messages from abductees' relatives, music and reports on the international situation concerning North Korea. The Korean programming is aimed at Koreans in the North to raise their awareness and perhaps find a way of passing to the Japanese authorities any details they have of abductees. Source: BBC Monitoring research 10 Jul 07 (via DXLD 7-080) Japan begins broadcasts for abductees, if they can discover the time and frequency. That will also avoid having the broadcasts intercepted by the intended listeners. Misc - ZIMBABWE Govt Gets a Taste of Own Medicine http://allafrica.com/stories/printable/200707060702.html Zimbabwe Independent (Harare) NEWS 6 July 2007 Posted to the web 6 July 2007 By Itai Mushekwe Harare GOVERNMENT radio jamming equipment reportedly purchased in China has backfired, gagging its own new shortwave project, Voice of Zimbabwe (VOZ), sources at the station revealed to the Zimbabwe Independent this week. The ambitious station, set up to counter Western broadcasts, is said to be battling to recruit qualified personnel to run its operations while its few employees are still in Harare instead of moving to Gweru where it was due to be housed. Sources said the equipment was believed to be made up of three jammers installed at Thornhill, a military airbase and government communications centre in the Midlands. The plan was to block a perceived negative publicity campaign from outside radio stations such as Voice of America (VOA) funded by the U.S. State Department, SW Radio which beams from London and Dutch-funded Voice of the People (VOP), among others. The jamming equipment has prevented VOZ from starting regular operations due to the self-signal interception going on at the station. Zimbabweans have been forced to listen to state radio programming owing to punitive broadcasting laws enacted by government. The country has four state-controlled radio stations operating under the frequency modulation (FM) radio wave band and one shortwave, VOZ, which appears to be suffering a stillbirth. Government clamped down on Capital Radio, Zimbabwe's first independent radio station in 2000 setting the police on the station's offices in Harare where its equipment was confiscated. Radio Dialogue, a community radio station housed in Bulawayo, has also been forcibly shut down. "Ever since the station was launched on May 25, it is yet to start regular operations," a source said. "There are no news broadcast nor a set programming timetable. To make things worse there are no announcers, liberation war music occasionally plays but fades away at different times." Government announced two months ago that the station would run trial broadcasts for three weeks on 5975 kHz and 4828 kHz, but the trials were a major flop owing to the jamming machinery from China. In a bid to cover the broadcasting setback both Zimbabwe Broadcasting Holdings (ZBH) and Information minister Sikhanyiso Ndlovu have remained tight-lipped on the issue and have failed to give any explanation as to why the touted panacea to counter Western "pirate" radio stations is failing to broadcast. VOZ boss, Happison Muchechetere who is also a war veteran yesterday denied that the station was experiencing technical problems. He said government had purchased state-of-the-art equipment for the propaganda project. Muchechetere said government is at war on the airwaves with imperialists. He said the "imperialists" will not win. "It's a war of the airwaves and we're not afraid," said Muchechetere. "We know we're at war with imperialists and they are not going to win. You people forget that you're doing propaganda for the white man. I'm not ashamed that I'm doing propaganda for Zimbabweans and for someone who liberated this country. Hapana chirikujammer apa (There is no jamming here). We are not experiencing any technical problems," he said.
