650 KMTI, Manti, Utah, 3/19/07, 0200-0230 EDT (0600-0630 UTC). No more than a minute after the TOH, I heard the Morse Code and Sweep Tones go through several iterations for about ten minutes, with another set beginning at about 20 minutes after the hour. WSM proved to be quite a challenge, and using a directional loop antenna with my trusty but flaky Sony ICF-2010, I had to decide between maximum nulling of WSM or maximum gain on the KMTI signal. Since I didn't have a signal to tune into before the TOH, I chose maximum nulling, and the tones proved to be no problem, although I would give the SIO as 223 as I was not able to completely null WSM. Prior to the start of the test, I did hear a talking station several times that I was never able to identify. Also, received a QSL from Les Rayburn within 24 hours of my report. The letter provided historical information about the AM operation including a brief station history and antenna information. The v/s notes 'KOA is on eof the most frequently reported stations world wide. The only region we don't regularly hear from is the area around the Indian Ocean.' I did receive a f/d ppc from CE Jan Chadwell. No letter but the ppc for station name was filled in by him as "RPU for KOA Denver". Freq as 25.95 MHz with date and time For transmitter location he wrote in Denver and power of 100 watts. I believe that stands for Remote Pickup Unit.
